Summary: The process of seed germination is a series of events starting from wetting to the emergence of the embryo from the seed coat. The characteristics of the seed surface and surroundings affect water absorption by seeds. Modifying the seed surface is a useful tactic to influence seed germination.

Summary: Cold plasma is an innovative technology that has gained attention in the agricultural industry. This study investigated the impact of cold plasma on the germination parameters and vigor of radish and carrot seeds. The results showed that CAPP-treated seeds had higher germination rates, vigor index, and chlorophyll content compared to control seeds. CAPP treatment also affected the antioxidant capabilities and phenolic/flavonoid levels of the seedlings. Overall, treating seeds with CAPP for 3 minutes positively influenced germination and sprouting development.

Summary: The study investigated the variation of gene expression in Arabidopsis thaliana seeds or leaves through irradiation with oxygen and air plasmas. Irradiation with oxygen plasma promoted growth and induced gene expression in plant cells through neutral active oxygen species. The increase in leaf area ratio and growth enhancement effect induced by oxygen plasma irradiation were inherited by next-generation cells. DNA demethylation-related gene expression increased while methylation and acetylation were suppressed by oxygen irradiation. Air plasma irradiation suppressed acetylation but had no significant effect on methylation and demethylation. Active oxygen species played a key role in the variation of gene expression in both cases.

Summary: A novel approach using dual-frequency excitation sources was reported to enhance the properties of non-equilibrium plasma under atmospheric pressure. By applying a small radio-frequency component in addition to a low-frequency source, improvements in electron acceleration, density, and discharge stability were observed without significant increase in gas temperature. The results suggest that the system allows for higher input power when the RF component is comparable in magnitude with the LF component.

Summary: Low-pressure discharge is a significant issue for the development of high-power and miniaturized microwave components in spacecraft. In order to understand the mechanism of low-pressure discharge in spacecraft microwave components, an emission spectroscopy diagnostic platform is constructed to study the plasma reaction dynamics and damage effect of low-pressure RF discharge. The study reveals that gas pressure can influence the concentration of different species in the plasma and the emission spectrum shows a linear increase with input power.

Summary: The concept of a new, one-step and safe by design process for synthesizing metal-polymer nanocomposite thin films on a large surface is presented. The novelty of this method lies in the in situ formation of nanoparticles inside the plasma reactor, resulting in homogeneous layers of non-agglomerated nanoparticles with high density. By adjusting the low and high-frequency discharges, gold/polymer nanocomposites with different morphologies and optical properties can be synthesized. Factors such as the concentration of gold in the aerosol, gas residence time in the plasma, and the ratio of high and low-frequency discharges are discussed for their impact on the thin films.
