Summary: The study found that Finnish veterinarians generally follow IPC guidelines more often in livestock farms than in stables. The use of protective coats or coveralls was more common in livestock practice than in equine practice. Education of veterinarians is still needed and hand-washing facilities need to be improved even in a high-income country like Finland.

Summary: The study investigated the compliance rate of busy ambulatory surgical centers with patients bringing CPAP devices before surgery, with only 59.7% of facilities requiring patients to bring them. Additionally, only 25.37% of facilities reported using a CPAP machine postoperatively in the past 2 years.

Summary: This study aimed to measure the occurrence of intraoperative hypotension (IOH) in ambulatory surgery centers (ASCs) and describe the characteristics of patients and procedures associated with IOH. The results showed that 30.9% of ASC cases had a mean arterial pressure (MAP) <65 mmHg for at least 15 minutes. The incidence of IOH varied based on age, gender, ASA physical status, surgery length, and complexity of the procedures.

Summary: This study assessed the prevalence of surgical site infections (SSIs) and the prevention practices in rural and semi-urban hospitals in India. The findings showed that these hospitals had good compliance with perioperative sterilization practices and postoperative mop count, but more than 80% of hospitals continued prophylactic antimicrobials in the postoperative period. The study also found that the SSI rates were influenced by the surgical wound class, with dirty wounds having a six times higher infection rate than clean cases.

Summary: The study found poor interobserver reliability when using the CDC surgical wound class definitions for orthopaedic surgeries, with only a small percentage of physicians believing that the system adequately covered orthopaedic procedures. Alternate definitions are needed to improve the validity of the system for orthopaedic surgeries.

Summary: The study found poor interobserver reliability among orthopaedic surgeons using the CDC surgical wound class definitions, with only 15.4% of physicians believing that the current classification system was suitable for orthopaedic surgeries. New definitions are necessary to improve the validity of the system for subspecialty procedures.

Summary: This study finds that the acquisition of ambulatory surgical centers (ASCs) by private equity firms does not have significant effects on outcomes such as unplanned hospital visits, total costs, and total encounters. The study also suggests that there is no significant relative change in outcomes when comparing private equity-acquired ASCs with those that were never acquired.

Summary: This study compared the diagnostic criteria of CDC and FRI consensus definition in operatively treated fracture patients, showing that 98.9% of infections could be captured when using FRI consensus criteria, while CDC criteria only captured less than half of the patients. This highlights the importance of standardization in diagnosing FRI and the superiority of the recently developed FRI consensus definition.

Summary: This study develops a framework for capacity planning in ambulatory surgery centers (ASCs), with a focus on addressing the interdependence of activities, stochastic durations, and uncertainties in patient-mix. The approach proposes a bottom-up strategy using optimization methods and data analytics, and highlights the benefits of considering all three stages of the patient visit. The study aims to guide ASCs in making appropriate investments for capacity adjustment and patient scheduling, with the potential to improve ASC operations.

Summary: In 2018, Medicare removed total knee arthroplasty from the list of inpatient-only procedures, resulting in a new pool of patients eligible for outpatient total knee arthroplasty. This study compared the characteristics of patients undergoing outpatient knee arthroplasty at hospital-owned surgery centers (HOSCs) vs freestanding ambulatory surgery centers (FASCs) in 2017 and 2018.

Summary: This study evaluated an orthopaedic-specific surgical wound classification system (SWCS) and the current CDC system, finding that both have excellent reliability. The use of orthopaedic-specific SWCS leads to more detailed wound classification compared to the CDC system. The study also revealed low satisfaction with the CDC system and a desire for further development and validation of an orthopaedic-specific SWCS.

Summary: The study aims to describe and quantify independent prescribing of oncology pharmacists in adult, ambulatory cancer centers in Alberta, Canada. A retrospective chart review was conducted to analyze prescriptions from January to June 2018. Results showed that over 6 months, 33 clinically deployed pharmacists ordered a total of 3474 prescriptions, with a median of 7 medications prescribed per month. There were significant variations in prescribing volume and class of medications among pharmacists.
