Summary: This study examined the prevalence of lifetime dual disorder in individuals with alcohol or cocaine use disorder and its impact on treatment retention. The findings showed a high prevalence of dual disorder among these individuals, which could influence their dropout from treatment. Factors such as alcohol use, polysubstance use, and living alone were also associated with treatment dropout.

Summary: This study aimed to identify determinants of emergency department (ED) use and hospitalization among patients with substance-related disorders (SRDs). The prevalence rates of ED use and hospitalization among patients with SRDs were found to be 36% and 41%, respectively. Factors associated with both ED use and hospitalization were medical insurance, other drug and alcohol use disorders, mental health disorders, and chronic physical illnesses. A lower level of education increased the risk of ED use only. Providing comprehensive services and chronic care after discharge could help reduce ED use and hospitalization among these vulnerable patients with SRDs.

Summary: This study examines the impact of COVID-19 on clinical psychiatric diagnoses using electronic health records from the New York City metropolitan region. The findings show that patients with pre-COVID psychiatric diagnoses are more likely to have subsequent anxiety disorders, mood disorders, and psychosis after COVID-19 infection. Patients without pre-COVID psychiatric diagnoses are more likely to have substance use disorders and new diagnoses of anxiety disorders, mood disorders, and psychosis during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Summary: This study suggests that individuals involved in the justice system with serious psychiatric disorders are at greater risk in social and economic areas, while those with co-occurring disorders are at relatively high risk across almost all areas. Different interventions may be needed for these different groups to effectively reduce recidivism risk.

Summary: This study analyzed the trends in crude mortality rate (CMR), age-standardized mortality rate (ASMR), and burden of mental disorders (MD) in China using data from 2009 to 2019. Results showed that from 2009 to 2019, there were 18,178 MD deaths, accounting for 0.13% of total deaths, with 68.3% occurring in rural areas. The CMR of MD in China was 0.75/100,000 persons (ASMR: 0.62/100,000 persons). Schizophrenia and alcohol use disorder (AUD) were identified as the leading causes of death among MD patients.

Summary: Rates of alcohol-associated deaths have been increasing over the past 20 years, with a significant rise between 2019 and 2020. This study investigates the geographic disparities in documentation of alcohol-related problems in primary care electronic health records, which may result in undertreatment of alcohol use disorder.

Summary: This study found that the risk of substance-related problems in adolescent ADHD patients is mainly linked to co-existing conduct problems, while patients with ADHD alone have a similar risk to adolescents in the general population with mild conduct problem symptoms. Girls with ADHD and high conduct problems are slightly more at risk for substance-related problems compared to boys.

Summary: Clinical guidelines for SUD or SMI tend to have limited considerations for coexisting disorders in diagnosis, treatment and management despite their high co-prevalence. There is a need to improve the scope, quality and inclusivity of guidelines to offer person-centered and integrated care.

Summary: The study explores the relationship between childhood aspirations, socioeconomic position, intellectual abilities, and dual diagnosis, psychosis, and substance use disorder (SUD) in later life. The findings suggest that boys with low intelligence scores are at an increased risk of developing psychotic disorders and SUD. Furthermore, individuals with a combination of low intelligence scores, high aspirations, and/or high socioeconomic position may have an increased risk of developing these disorders. However, further research is needed to understand the temporality and underlying mechanisms of these associations.

Summary: This study aims to determine the appropriate AUDIT-C cut-points for detecting alcohol-related problems among serving Canadian, UK and US soldiers. The results showed that AUDIT-C cut-points of >= 6/7 for men and >= 5/6 for women performed well in detecting hazardous and harmful alcohol use. This information can be useful for population surveillance, pre-deployment/post-deployment screening of military personnel, and clinical practice.
