This study investigates the potential of AMSR-E surface soil moisture (SSM) time series data to distinctively identify paddy rice pixels and map paddy rice cultivated area at national scales. Taking China as the test site, we first established and applied a paddy rice planting index (PRPI) to each AMSR-E 25 km pixel over the entire country during the period 2003-2011. A mathematical model was then constructed for the retrieval of paddy rice cultivated area at the AMSR-E pixel scale using data obtained from PRPI as input, and a high coefficient of determination (R-2 = 0.86) was recorded at the national scale. Provincial scale validation of the modeled paddy rice fraction shows a high correlation coefficient (R) of up to 0.94. In a subsequent step, the inter-annual variations in AMSR-E retrieved paddy rice areas were evaluated with annual agricultural census data, and an R-value of 0.93 was recorded. A good performance of the proposed retrieval method was also recorded when validated against MODIS paddy rice distribution images, and in which, five out of the seven selected validation sub-regions, had R values larger than 0.85, while R-values of up to 0.70-0.75 were recorded in the other two. The results demonstrate that the proposed method is effective in mapping paddy rice agriculture at national scales, and therefore, the applicability of the PRPI algorithm on mapping paddy rice at continental and global scales is worth investigating.

Evaluating Sentinel-1A datasets for rice leaf area index estimation based on machine learning regression models

Lamin R. Mansaray, Fumin Wang, Adam S. Kanu, Lingbo Yang

Summary: This study evaluates the application of Sentinel-1A satellite data for rice green leaf area index estimation and compares the performance of different polarizations and machine learning regression models. The results show that using VV data leads to relatively more accurate results, while the combination of VHVV is even more accurate than VV alone. Additionally, tree-based algorithms can better handle the dimensionality of the data.

Assessment and Inter-Comparison of Multi-Source High Spatial Resolution Evapotranspiration Products over Lancang-Mekong River Basin, Southeast Asia

Houbing Chen, Palingamoorthy Gnanamoorthy, Yaoliang Chen, Lamin R. Mansaray, Qinghai Song, Kuo Liao, Aoni Shi, Ganlin Feng, Chenna Sun

Summary: This paper assessed four high spatial resolution remote sensing ET products in the Lancang-Mekong River Basin and found variations in their performance across different vegetation types and climate zones. Although these products were able to reflect spatial differences in the basin, they did not show consistent temporal trends or uniform spatial distributions.

Gibbs spatial process for characterization of filament interaction in ReRAM devices via photon emission microscopy

Ernest Wu, Franco Stellari, Leonidas Ocola, Martin Frank, Peilin Song, Takashi Ando

Summary: In this work, the spatial statistical properties of filament patterns in resistive random-access memory (ReRAM) devices were investigated using near-infrared photon emission microscopy (PEM). A strong clustering and non-Poisson pattern of filaments were observed, and a Poisson mixture model incorporating the clustering effect was proposed, showing excellent agreement with the PEM data. A two-filament pattern was also detected within the ReRAM devices, and both attractive and repulsive interactions among the filaments were found to be necessary to explain their spatial distribution using a Gibbs process.

Rice biophysical parameter retrieval with optical satellite imagery: a comparative assessment of parametric and non-parametric models

Lamin R. Mansaray, Victor T. S. Kabba, Lingbo Yang

Summary: This study compares the performance of parametric and non-parametric models in estimating rice biomass and LAI using optical satellite imagery. The findings suggest that non-parametric models outperform parametric models before heading, while the opposite is true after heading. These results provide guidance for selecting appropriate models for estimating rice biomass and LAI.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of exogenous application of methyl jasmonate (MeJa) on the physiological and biochemical characteristics, yield, and quality of two fragrant rice cultivars under Cd stress. The results showed that Cd toxicity impaired plant growth and physiological attributes, while MeJa application improved growth and yield under Cd stress conditions.

Impacts of land-use and land-cover change on rural livelihoods: Evidence from eastern Sierra Leone

Morrison K. Lahai, Victor T. S. Kabba, Lamin R. Mansaray

Summary: This study investigates the spatio-temporal dynamics of land-use and land-cover (LULC) changes and their impacts on household livelihoods in rural Sierra Leone. The results show a significant decrease in wetland area and an increase in dense forest, with a decline in natural assets and an increase in physical and financial assets. However, household livelihood outcomes are less favorable and vulnerable to food insecurity as LULC changes persist.

Onchidium struma polysaccharides exhibit hypoglycemic activity and modulate the gut microbiota in mice with type 2 diabetes mellitus

Yunfeng Zhao, Peilin Song, Shuai Yin, Tianyong Fan, Fengwei Li, Xiaodong Ge, Tingting Liu, Wei Xu, Su Xu, Ligen Chen

Summary: This study evaluated the anti-diabetic activity of Onchidium struma polysaccharides (OsPs) in diabetic mice. The results showed that OsPs significantly improved the features of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) by reducing fasting blood glucose levels, improving oral glucose tolerance test results, and decreasing pro-inflammatory factors. OsPs also improved insulin resistance and biochemical indicators, reduced lipid accumulation in the liver, and regulated the dysbiosis of gut microbiota. Moreover, OsPs increased the concentration of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs). OsPs can be used as a novel food supplement for the prevention and treatment of T2DM.

Mapping Waterlogging Damage to Winter Wheat Yield Using Downscaling-Merging Satellite Daily Precipitation in the Middle and Lower Reaches of the Yangtze River

Weiwei Liu, Yuanyuan Chen, Weiwei Sun, Ran Huang, Jingfeng Huang

Summary: Excessive water and water deficit are important limiting factors for global agricultural development. This study assessed the impact of waterlogging on winter wheat yield using downscaled and fused TRMM 3B42 data from 1998 to 2014. The downscaled data improved accuracy, while fusion with rain gauge measurements increased the precision of quantitative indicators. The study found that the accumulated number of rainy days of specific rain processes was a good indicator of waterlogging, and waterlogging levels were determined based on yield change rates. Spatial mapping of waterlogging can help policymakers implement prevention and mitigation strategies.
