Summary: This study aimed to investigate the impact of postoperative toxicity on patient quality of life and overall survival in esophageal cancer, and to determine whether patient and toxicity parameters could predict post-surgical cardiopulmonary total toxicity burden (CPTTB) and its association with short and long-term outcomes. The results showed that CPTTB was associated with decreased overall survival, longer post-esophagectomy length of stay, and higher death or readmission rate within 60 days of surgery.

Summary: The study aimed to determine if change in stage after neoadjuvant chemoradiation (CRT) was associated with improved survival in esophageal cancer using a national database. The results showed that pathologic complete response (pCR) was strongly associated with improved overall survival (OS), while downstaged, same-staged, and upstaged tumors were associated with a stepwise decline in survival.

The results showed that a radiation dose of 60 Gy was well tolerated and led to favorable survival outcomes due to the improvement in LRC in advanced ESCC patients.

Summary: The study found that patients with esophageal cancer who received neoadjuvant chemoradiation had significantly higher myocardial ECV compared to those who had surgery only. There is a dose-dependent relationship between radiation dose and myocardial ECV, with a 0.136% increase in ECV for each Gy of radiation.

Summary: In definitive chemoradiation for esophageal cancer, escalating radiation dose up to 61.6 Gy to the primary tumor did not significantly improve local tumor control compared to 50.4 Gy. The absence of a dose-effect was observed in both adenocarcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the association between histologic grade and prognosis in esophageal cancer patients who received neoadjuvant chemoradiation followed by resection. The study found that patients with post-neoadjuvant therapy histologic grade 1-2 had improved survival. Integrating histologic grade into postneoadjuvant staging may be necessary.

Summary: Esophageal cancer remains a leading cause of cancer death globally. While early-stage disease can be surgically treated, locally advanced disease is typically managed with concurrent chemoradiation, with proton therapy showing potential benefits in reducing complications and improving survival outcomes.

Summary: This study assessed the correlation between clinical complete response (ycCR) and pathologic complete response (ypCR) and found that current restaging tools cannot reliably predict ypCR after neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy (nCRT). Although multimodal restaging appears to be a more accurate predictor of ypCR than any individual testing modality, ycCR cannot be relied upon to determine the need for esophagectomy.

Summary: This randomized clinical trial compared the efficacy and adverse events of fluorouracil, cisplatin, and carboplatin in definitive chemoradiotherapy for patients with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC). The results showed that paclitaxel plus fluorouracil did not have superior overall survival compared to paclitaxel plus cisplatin or paclitaxel plus carboplatin regimens in locally advanced ESCC. The cisplatin group had higher rates of hematologic and gastrointestinal toxic effects.

Summary: The study found that among Central Australian Aboriginal women, chewers had the lowest placental weight, smokers had smaller placental areas, and some neonates required admission to the Special Care Nursery. Maternal smokeless tobacco use may negatively impact placental and neonatal outcomes, highlighting the need for expanded screening and cessation support.

It found that 61% of the patients experienced relief in cough after the surgery, while predictors of cough response to fundoplication were not accurately predicted by typical GORD symptoms or pH study variables.

Summary: This study used clinical and treatment data to analyze the impact of time to treatment completion on survival and identify factors associated with treatment delay for women diagnosed with breast cancer. The study found that, apart from clinical factors, being Indigenous, living in a disadvantaged area, and receiving multiple treatments within the public sector were associated with a higher likelihood of treatment completion beyond the optimal threshold of 37 weeks. Women whose treatment went beyond 37 weeks had a higher risk of death, and a delay in starting chemotherapy after surgery was also associated with poorer survival.

Summary: This study aimed to assess the impact of feedback on the performance of undergraduate nursing students during clinical placements. The results indicated that students in the intervention group had statistically higher performance scores than students in the control group when time and placement setting were controlled. This research provides evidence that engagement with an intervention based on attributes of effective feedback improves nursing students' workplace performance during clinical placement.

Summary: This study evaluated the rate of sentinel node biopsy (SNB) in high-risk melanoma patients and identified factors associated with the procedure not being performed. The study found that although adherence to SNB guidelines has increased, the overall SNB rate remains low, with almost two-thirds of eligible cases not receiving the procedure in 2019. This study highlights the crucial need to improve access to SNB for melanoma surgery in the Queensland population.
