Summary: This review focuses on the pharmacological treatment of cancer related fatigue in patients with advanced or metastatic cancer, although there are few high-quality studies performed in this setting. Fatigue is one of the most distressing symptoms experienced by cancer patients, with suggested biological mechanism for cancer related fatigue including immune activation triggered by tumor tissue or anticancer treatment.

Summary: This retrospective analysis of 130 patients admitted via the emergency department and later receiving palliative care in a neurological ward revealed that the main reasons for acute admission were epileptic seizures, gait disorders, disturbance of consciousness, pain, nutritional problems, or paresis. The study suggests that documenting the palliative situation and treatment limitations may help prevent unnecessary hospitalization, as emergency department assessment may not fully address all multidimensional needs, especially psychosocial problems. Future investigations should focus on developing short screening tools to identify palliative care needs of neurological patients in the emergency department.

Summary: The aim of this cohort study was to determine whether Post-acute Sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 Infection (PASC) are associated with physical inactivity in COVID-19 survivors. The study found that patients with one or more persistent PASC symptoms have greater odds of being physically inactive than those without any persistent symptoms. Dyspnea, fatigue, insomnia, post-traumatic stress, and severe muscle/joint pain were specifically associated with greater odds of physical inactivity. These findings suggest that PASC is associated with physical inactivity, which may have implications for interventions and patient care.

Summary: This study examined the Personal Wellbeing Index (PWI) in Spanish palliative care professionals and found medium to high levels of wellbeing. Marital status was positively correlated with wellbeing, while there was no relationship between wellbeing and age, gender, or profession. A structural equation model revealed a positive association between wellbeing and compassion satisfaction, and a negative one with burnout. The PWI was deemed suitable for measuring personal wellbeing in Spanish palliative care professionals.

Summary: The incidence of end-stage kidney disease is rising globally, but access to kidney replacement therapy is limited in South Africa due to resource constraints. Rationing of dialysis is deemed appropriate by the South African Constitutional Court, leading to patients being placed on a palliative care pathway. A multidisciplinary approach is needed to manage symptoms effectively and provide support for patients with ESKD.

Summary: This retrospective study aimed to identify predictors of critical illness in patients with ANCA-associated renal vasculitis. The results showed an association between low hemoglobin levels and the requirement for ICU supportive care in these patients. Additionally, hemoglobin levels below 9.8 g/dL at admission independently predicted prolonged ICU supportive care in critically ill patients with ANCA-associated renal vasculitis.

Summary: The study showed that oral sucrosomial iron in combination with ESAs significantly improved the hematological response in cancer patients with chemotherapy-induced anemia, particularly within 12 weeks. There was a trend of greater response in the sucrosomial iron arm in both iron replete and functional iron deficiency subgroups. No differences were observed in terms of safety and transfusion need.

Summary: This systematic review evaluated the efficacy of non-pharmacological interventions for treating fatigue in advanced disease patients, with moderate-quality evidence supporting physical exercise as a treatment for fatigue in advanced cancer patients. However, data on other advanced diseases is lacking, and further research is needed to explore the potential benefits of restoration exercise and psycho-educational therapy.

Summary: Doctors working in specialist palliative care services experience a variety of strong emotions in their daily work, including distress from patients, families, staff, and organizational issues. These strong emotional reactions can impact clinical behaviors, patient care, and doctors' personal lives. Various strategies are developed to manage these emotions, including debriefing, setting boundaries, avoidance, self-reflection, and non-work related activities such as spending time with family.

Summary: The rapid escalation of COVID-19 cases worldwide poses a high mortality risk for individuals with preexisting conditions, including cancer patients. Palliative care workers play a crucial role in responding to COVID-19 by ensuring timely symptom management, potentially redeploying staff for psychosocial support, and utilizing technology for communication with patients.

Summary: Advances in medical care have allowed more young people with LLNDDs to survive into adulthood. However, the traditional model of care between pediatrics and adult medicine is not suitable for their needs. A joint transitional care model between pediatrics and adult PC team is recommended to address the palliative care needs of young adults with LLNDDs.
