Summary: This study evaluated the diagnostic test accuracy of the 3D-CAM in delirium detection through a systematic review and meta-analysis. The results showed that the 3D-CAM has good diagnostic accuracy for delirium detection in different care settings. Therefore, the use of 3D-CAM is recommended for clinical delirium detection.

Summary: ICU delirium is a predictor of greater morbidity and higher mortality in the pediatric population. This study validated the Preschool Confusion Assessment Method for the ICU in neonates and young infants and found a delirium prevalence of 47% in this population, with higher rates observed among neonates (< 1 month old) and infants 1-6 months old.

Summary: The use of the Confusion Assessment Method (CAM) for delirium assessment in hospitalized older adults can be improved with the implementation of a protocol. While the percentage of admissions screened for delirium increased, adherence to daily screening and consistency of positive delirium screenings remain areas for improvement.

Summary: This study examines the prevalence of delirium in older people with cancer and the accuracy of delirium assessment tools. The study found a high prevalence of delirium in this population and concluded that the CAM scale has higher diagnostic accuracy compared to the MDAS scale. The presence of cognitive impairment affects the detection of delirium.

Summary: Hepatic encephalopathy (HE), a subtype of delirium, is common in cirrhosis and associated with poor outcomes. This study aimed to evaluate the performance of the Confusion Assessment Method for the Intensive Care Unit (CAM-ICU) as a bedside screening tool for HE. The results showed that CAM-ICU had excellent agreement with the West Haven criteria (WHC), a previously established measure of cognitive function. CAM-ICU was able to predict short-term mortality in hospitalized cirrhosis patients.

Summary: This study aimed to translate, culturally adapt, and validate the Family Confusion Assessment Method for critically ill patients. The German version of the tool showed high sensitivity and specificity in detecting delirium, suggesting it can be a useful tool for family members to identify delirium in the intensive care unit without prior training.

Summary: This study compared the prevalence, characteristics, drug treatment, and outcomes of patients diagnosed with behavioral disturbance using Natural Language Processing (NLP) vs the Confusion Assessment Method for intensive care unit (CAM-ICU). The results showed that NLP-Dx-BD identifies more patients likely to receive antipsychotic medications, and treatment with antipsychotic medications is rare in the absence of NLP-Dx-BD.

Summary: A method for detecting staphylococcal enterotoxins in food has been developed, validated, and standardized under the CEN Mandate M/381 from the European Commission. The method involves an extraction procedure based on dialysis concentration followed by immunoenzymatic detection. Two commercially available immuno-enzymatic kits met the performance criteria in an interlaboratory study, leading to recognition as the European Union reference method for detecting staphylococcal enterotoxins in food.

Summary: The Toulouse-Pieron Cancelation Test (TP) is a classic psychometric tool used for assessing selective/sustained attention, processing speed, and visuo-perceptual abilities. This study provides normative scores for the TP in a sample of Portuguese healthy adults, finding that education is a major predictor of TP-WE and TP-DI.

Summary: This study aimed to characterize hospitalizations with dementia-related agitation in mainland Portugal from 2010 to 2015 and investigate the relationship between agitation and hospitalization outcomes. The results showed that agitation was associated with longer hospital stays but did not increase the risk of fatal outcomes.

Summary: This study investigated whether the incidence of surgical site infections (SSIs) after colorectal surgery varies between hospitals and whether this variance can be explained by hospital characteristics. The results showed that procedural variables and hospital dimension can explain almost half of the variance in SSI, indicating the importance of considering these factors when implementing prevention strategies.

Summary: The objective of this study was to describe the differences in nutritional, functional, and clinical statuses between younger and older heart failure patients. The results showed that the frailty phenotype should be assessed in all patients, regardless of age, and hand grip strength can be used as a good predictor of age.

Summary: The incidence of surgical site infection (SSI) is highest after colorectal surgery. This study assessed the impact of risk factors for SSI using the population attributable fraction (PAF). The results showed that 39% of SSI cases remained unaccounted for by current surveillance, and almost one-third of SSI cases have potentially modifiable factors.

Summary: Consumption of antimicrobials contributes to antimicrobial resistance, but there is limited knowledge of the key determinants of antimicrobial prescribing behavior in hospitals. This study aimed to identify the main factors influencing doctors' decisions on antimicrobial prescription and found heterogeneity between departments in terms of prescription context, autonomy, and confidence. Understanding these determinants is crucial for the successful implementation of quality improvement interventions in Antimicrobial Stewardship Programs (ASP).

Summary: This study characterized registered mental disorders in epilepsy-related hospitalizations and analyzed their association with hospitalization outcomes. The results showed that episodes with comorbid mental disorders had longer length of stay, higher in-hospital mortality, readmissions, and charges. Therefore, diagnosing and treating mental disorders in people with epilepsy is crucial.

Summary: The coexistence of frailty and sarcopenia in heart failure outpatients was studied in this research. The study found a relatively low frequency of coexistence, suggesting that both conditions should be individually addressed and screened in clinical practice. Factors associated with having concomitant frailty and sarcopenia included being a woman, older age, having heart failure with preserved ejection fraction, and using certain medications, while the use of statins showed an inverse effect. The study suggests that interventions such as nutritional and mental health interventions and exercise training may benefit these patients.
