Self-focused attention related to social anxiety during free speaking tasks activates the right frontopolar area

Nozomi Tomita, Hiroaki Kumano

Summary: Self-focused attention and other-focused attention are essential factors in social anxiety. The study examined brain activities during speech tasks and found that the right frontopolar area and right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex were more active in the self-focused attention condition, while the left superior temporal gyrus was more active in the other-focused attention condition. Moreover, it was discovered that individuals with higher social anxiety tended to have higher activity in the right frontopolar area, and this activity increased with higher subjective self-focused attention in the absence of attentional manipulation.

Effects of the Attention Training Technique on Brain Activity in Healthy University Students Assessed by EEG Source Imaging

Kaori Usui, Issaku Kawashima, Nozomi Tomita, Toru Takahashi, Hiroaki Kumano

Summary: The study examined the neurocognitive effects of the Attention Training Technique (ATT) on healthy participants. Twenty university students practiced ATT for 20 days as a homework assignment. Changes in brain activity were observed during selective attention, attention switching, and divided attention conditions. Results showed decreased alpha 1 frequency band power in the left orbital frontal cortex and alpha 2 power in the right inferior temporal cortex during the divided attention condition. These changes may reflect the impact of ATT practice but further research with a control group is needed.
