Seven strains representing a novel yeast species belonging to the genus Cryptococcus were isolated from different substrates from Patagonia, Argentina, and The Netherlands. Three strains were isolated from a meltwater river draining from the Frias glacier at Mount Tronador situated in Nahuel Huapi National Park (Patagonia) and four were isolated from apple surfaces in Randwijk, The Netherlands. Analysis of the D1/D2 large-subunit rRNA gene and ITS region sequences indicated that these strains represent a single species that is distinct from other species of the Tremellales clade. The name Cryptococcus spencermartinsiae sp. nov. is proposed to accommodate these strains. The type strain is CRUB 1230(T) (=CBS 10760(T) = DBVPG 8010(T)).

Trends in yeast diversity discovery

Teun Boekhout, Anthony S. Amend, Fouad El Baidouri, Toni Gabaldon, Jozsef Geml, Moritz Mittelbach, Vincent Robert, Chen Shuhui Tan, Benedetta Turchetti, Duong Vu, Qi-Ming Wang, Andrey Yurkov

Summary: Yeast, defined as unicellular fungi, are found in various fungal lineages and are not a taxonomic unit; it may take hundreds of years to fully document all yeast species. Many areas, including cold habitats and threatened environments, remain unsampled for yeasts. Studies have shown hybrid yeast species, prevalent yeast communities in natural habitats impacted by deforestation, and surprising global distributions of yeast species in soils and marine waters.

Multiple Hybridization Events Punctuate the Evolutionary Trajectory of Malassezia furfur

Bart Theelen, Veronica Mixao, Giuseppe Ianiri, Joleen Pei Zhen Goh, Jan Dijksterhuis, Joseph Heitman, Thomas L. Dawson, Toni Gabaldon, Teun Boekhout

Summary: Malassezia furfur is a common commensal member of human/animal microbiota that is also associated with several pathogenic states. Recent studies report the involvement of Malassezia species in Crohn's disease, pancreatic cancer, and cystic fibrosis. A recent genomics analysis revealed the existence of hybrid isolates and identified their putative parental lineages, showing the occurrence of multiple hybridization events in the species' evolutionary trajectory.

Summary: Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a common disorder characterized by chronic abdominal pain and changes in bowel movements. Visceral hypersensitivity may be caused by intestinal fungi, but the diversity of fungal communities does not differ between IBS subgroups. The study highlights the importance of conducting strain-specific cause-and-effect studies in IBS research.

Multicenter Study of Susceptibility of Aspergillus Species Isolated from Iranian University Hospitals to Seven Antifungal Agents

Parisa Badiee, Teun Boekhout, Ali Zarei Mahmoudabadi, Rasoul Mohammadi, Seyyed Amin Ayatollahi Mousavi, Mohammad Javad Najafzadeh, Jafar Soltani, Jamal Hashemi, Kambiz Diba, Abdolkarim Ghadimi-Moghadam, Ali Reza Salimi-Khorashad, Tahereh Shokohi, Maneli Amin Shahidi, Fatemeh Ghasemi, Hadis Jafarian

Summary: Aspergillus species are the leading cause of invasive aspergillosis in immunocompromised hosts, and their susceptibility to antifungal agents might vary. This study aimed to investigate the frequency of Aspergillus species among Iranian patients and their susceptibility to seven antifungals. The results showed that Aspergillus section Flavi species were the most common and that luliconazole, caspofungin, and isavuconazole were the most effective antifungal agents for treating Aspergillus infections.

Summary: This study reveals that the presence of Filobasidium spp. in the feces of donors is associated with a positive response to FMT for patients with UC, suggesting it may serve as a predictive fungal biomarker for successful FMT.

Obligate sexual reproduction of a homothallic fungus closely related to the Cryptococcus pathogenic species complex

Andrew Ryan Passer, Shelly Applen Clancey, Terrance Shea, Marcia David-Palma, Anna Floyd Averette, Teun Boekhout, Betina M. Porcel, Minou Nowrousian, Christina A. Cuomo, Sheng Sun, Joseph Heitman, Marco A. Coelho

Summary: The study reveals the mechanism of self-compatibility in the fungal species Cryptococcus depauperatus, which is closely related to human fungal pathogens. Through comparative genomics and analysis of mutants, the researchers demonstrate that the sexual cycle of C. depauperatus involves meiosis and is orchestrated by a mating receptor and pheromone ligand pair. These findings provide insights into transitions between sexual reproduction modes in the fungal kingdom.

Summary: The present study aimed to isolate, screen, and characterize wild yeasts recovered from bio-waste and co-products of Ethiopian sugar factories for bioethanol production. The results showed that strain M. caribbica MJTm3 exhibited high ethanol tolerance and fermentation potential and could be further utilized for industrial bioethanol production.

Da Vinci's yeast: Blastobotrys davincii f.a., sp. nov

Cobus M. M. Visagie, Teun Boekhout, Bart Theelen, Jan Dijksterhuis, Neriman Yilmaz, Keith A. A. Seifert

Summary: A new species of the yeast genus Blastobotrys was discovered in house dust, with similar species detected globally in various substrates. The new species, Blastobotrys davincii, was classified based on morphological, phylogenetic, and physiological characters. The preferred name for the new species is still under debate, but Blastobotrys is argued to be more suitable than Trichomonascus. A nomenclatural review and accepted species list for Blastobotrys/Trichomonascus clade were also provided.

Summary: Yeasts associated with dung beetles, such as Meyerozyma and Pichia, are diverse and abundant. The study on dung beetles in Botswana revealed that their guts provide a rich niche for non-Saccharomyces yeast species. This research contributes to the understanding of the diversity of dung beetle-associated yeasts.

Summary: The purpose of this study was to optimize fermentation parameters to create favorable conditions for bioethanol production from sugar-rich substrates. The response surface method based on central composite design was used to determine the optimal conditions. The results confirmed the feasibility of achieving high ethanol yield using these conditions. The study demonstrated that the response surface method with central composite design is an effective approach for bioethanol production from molasses.
