Summary: This study characterized a novel species named Ruminococcus bovis isolated from the ruminal content of a dairy cow. The strain was found to be a strict anaerobic bacterium capable of fermenting carbohydrates to produce acetate as a major fermentation product. Phylogenetic analysis showed that Ruminococcus bovis represents a divergent lineage within the genus Ruminococcus.

Summary: Carbapenemase-producing Enterobacterales, including KPC-2 producers, have become a major clinical problem. During an outbreak in Quebec City, Canada, KPC-2-producing Klebsiella michiganensis and Citrobacter farmeri were isolated from a patient six weeks apart. Both isolates carried nearly identical IncN2 plasmids with blaKPC-2 on a Tn4401b element. This suggests recent plasmid transfer between the two species and a recent transposition event.

Summary: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a growing global problem that affects public health, agriculture, and the environment. The mechanism of aerial transport of antimicrobial-resistant bacteria via bioaerosols is not well understood. This ongoing project in Canada aims to assess the presence and fate of AMR in bioaerosols, including the emissions of antibiotic resistance genes, their long-distance transport, and dissemination models. A multidisciplinary approach is necessary to understand the role of bioaerosols in the spread of AMR.

Summary: The understanding of DNA hybridization on solid supports lags behind that in aqueous phases, and predictive mathematical models are lacking. Ongoing research has identified important parameters but remains incomplete in accounting for all interactions. A novel instrument has been developed for real-time monitoring of DNA hybridization, allowing for exploration of the impact of the length of overhanging ends and rapid validation of microarray capture probes.
