Start with reducing sedentary behavior: A stepwise approach to physical activity counseling in clinical practice

The authors suggest a stepwise approach to targeting sedentary behavior in clinical practice, particularly for highly sedentary individuals or those with chronic diseases or physical impairments. The findings emphasize the importance of addressing sedentary behavior as the first step towards promoting an active lifestyle.

Timely referral to a specialized center is important to identify and treat progressive liver diseases in asymptomatic children.

Harmonized approach to estimate the burden of disease of dietary exposure to four chemical contaminants- A French study

Drinks, other foods (mostly composite dishes), and fish and seafood were the main contributors to the disease burden.

Skeletal Dysplasia Families: A Stepwise Approach to Diagnosis

Summary: Skeletal dysplasias are a group of genetic disorders characterized by bone and cartilage abnormalities, comprising over 400 disorders. Professor Juergen Spranger proposed the concept of bone dysplasia families in the 1980s, stating that different bone dysplasias with similar skeletal patterns can be grouped into families, and the diagnosis can be made through pattern recognition followed by careful analysis. The concept has been validated and expanded, enabling a stepwise approach to the radiologic diagnosis of skeletal dysplasias.

Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis in COVID-19 Case reports of a stepwise approach

DALY trend and predictive analysis of COPD in China and its provinces: Findings from the global burden of disease study

Summary: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is the most common chronic respiratory disease in the world, particularly in China. Although there is a downward trend of COPD DALY in China and its provinces, some provinces still face challenges. Smoking and air pollution are the main risk factors, which vary by region, gender, and age. Predictions for the next 10 years show that ASR attributable to smoking may significantly increase among men, ASR attributable to air pollution may significantly decrease in women, but ASR attributable to second-hand smoke may increase in women.

Multi-Resolution Population Mapping Based on a Stepwise Downscaling Approach Using Multisource Data

Summary: This article presents a stepwise downscaling approach using random forest regression kriging technique to downscale census data to multi-resolution gridded population datasets. Population distribution maps at different spatial resolutions were generated and compared with other downscaling methods and population products using Nanjing, China as the experimental case. The results showed that the proposed approach produced gridded population maps with higher accuracy and more accurate details of population distribution, resulting in a significant reduction in mean absolute error and root mean squared error values.

Summary: This study aimed to describe the clinical characteristics and management of patients with neurocysticercosis (NCC) diagnosed and treated in Europe. A systematic search of published and unpublished data on NCC cases in Europe from 2000 to 2019 was conducted, and demographic, clinical, and radiological information was extracted for each case. The results showed that the majority of NCC patients had a travel or migration history, with most cases originating from or traveling to Latin America, Africa, or Asia. Treatment varied depending on cyst location and number, but overall, the outcome was favorable for the majority of cases.

Among the 105 included studies, food- and water-borne diseases were the most frequently studied. The number of burden of infectious disease studies has increased over time, but there is less consensus in methodological approaches.

Burden of disease among older adults in Europe-trends in mortality and disability, 1990-2019

Summary: This study examines the development of disease burden among older adults in Europe over the last 30 years. The results indicate an overall increase in disease burden among older Europeans, especially in Western Europe. Eastern Europe experienced a decrease in DALYs between 2006 and 2013. There are significant differences in DALY rates among regions and genders, with cardiovascular diseases being the major contributor to changes in YLL rates.

The impact of natural environment on human alveolar echinococcosis: A township-level modeling study in Qinghai-Tibet Plateau

Summary: Through the analysis of environmental factors, this study found that minimum winter precipitation, percentage of grassland cover, and minimum elevation are linearly related to the incidence of human alveolar echinococcosis (AE). The relationship between maximum summer precipitation and AE is non-linear, with high incidence associated with moderate precipitation. Additionally, the interaction between maximum summer precipitation and number of patches of grassland also affects the incidence of human AE.

Foodborne Parasites and Their Complex Life Cycles Challenging Food Safety in Different Food Chains

Summary: This study compared the performance of two antigen enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) techniques for the detection of neurocysticercosis (NCC). The results showed that both ELISA techniques were able to detect antigen levels across different types of NCC and demonstrated high concordance. The B158/B60 antigen ELISA performed better in parenchymal and calcified NCC, while the TsW8/TsW5 antigen ELISA showed better detection in subarachnoid NCC.

Post COVID-19 condition and health-related quality of life: a longitudinal cohort study in the Belgian adult population

Summary: This longitudinal cohort study assessed the impact of COVID-19 and post COVID-19 conditions (PCC) on health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in the Belgian adult population. The study found a significant decline in HRQoL during the SARS-CoV-2 infection, but no clinically important difference three months after the infection, except among those with PCC. PCC symptoms such as fatigue/exhaustion, headache, memory problems, shortness of breath, and joint/muscle pain negatively affected HRQoL.

The effectiveness of food system policies to improve nutrition, nutrition-related inequalities and environmental sustainability: a scoping review

Summary: A global transformation of food systems is needed to address the interconnected pandemics of undernutrition, obesity, and climate change. This scoping review examined the effectiveness of food system policies/interventions in improving nutrition, nutrition inequalities, and environmental sustainability. Triple-duty interventions such as sustainable agriculture practices and school food programs were found to have positive impacts on all three outcomes, while labeling, reformulation, in-store nudging interventions, and fiscal measures showed potential to address two outcomes simultaneously.

Diagnostic Performance of Multi-Detector Computed Tomography Arthrography and 3-Tesla Magnetic Resonance Imaging to Diagnose Experimentally Created Articular Cartilage Lesions in Equine Cadaver Stifles

Summary: To prevent osteoarthritis, timely detection of cartilage damage is crucial. This study found that computed tomography arthrography (CTA) had superior diagnostic performance compared to 3-Tesla MRI in diagnosing cartilage lesions in the horse stifle joint. While the sensitivity of CTA (53%) and MRI (66%) were similar, CTA demonstrated higher specificity (66%) compared to MRI (52%), making it more accurate in diagnosing normal cartilage. CTA may be preferred in clinical settings due to its higher availability and easier image acquisition.
