Summary: This meta-analysis found that maternal fish consumption during pregnancy is associated with a lower risk of wheeze, eczema, and food allergy in children. However, there is no significant association between maternal fish consumption and the risk of offspring's asthma, allergic rhinitis, and inhalant allergy.

Summary: This study aims to comprehensively evaluate the relationship between environmental determinants and the risk of developing atopic dermatitis (AD) in the first four years of a child's life, including individual microbiome and immune responses. Through clinical research and biochemical analysis, the researchers hope to identify different risk factors for AD onset and exacerbation, as well as relevant biomarkers.

Summary: In this study, the impact of hand eczema on Health-Related Quality of Life (HRQoL) was investigated using a disease-specific questionnaire. The results showed that hand eczema has a high prevalence and negatively affects overall health status. It is therefore necessary to provide targeted prevention for high-risk groups and support and treatment for those most affected.

Summary: The aim of this study was to summarize the published data on the association between maternal exposure to antibiotics and the risk of atopic dermatitis (AD) in childhood. The results suggest that maternal exposure to antibiotics may lead to a modestly increased risk of AD in offspring.

Summary: A UK study found that people with atopic dermatitis (AD) have a 30% higher risk of deep-vein thrombosis and a 17% higher risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE). The increased VTE risk is lower in younger individuals and those without obesity. Identifying AD patients at higher VTE risk could impact clinical decision-making.

Summary: Studies suggest that early-life exposure to toxic metals and fluoride may affect the immune system and contribute to allergic diseases. This study investigated the relationship between exposure to these compounds in pregnant women and their infants with food allergy and atopic eczema. The results showed that gestational cadmium exposure was associated with an increased risk of food allergy in infants, while gestational and infant fluoride exposure had a weak association with atopic eczema. Further research is needed to establish causality.

Summary: Occupational exposure to blood-borne pathogens remains common among healthcare workers despite initiatives, with needlestick injuries being the main cause. At the American University of Beirut Medical Center, incidents resulting from blood-borne pathogen exposures showed a decreasing trend during the study period before increasing again in 2018. The nursing department was the only group that consistently showed a decrease in exposures.

Summary: The presence of Syrian refugees in Lebanon led to a resurgence of cutaneous leishmaniasis, with a significant increase in cases from 2012 to 2018. The majority of cases were observed in patients aged < 20 years, with the predominant species of Leishmania being L. tropica and L. major. Containment strategies and preventative measures are crucial in controlling the spread of the disease.

Summary: Lebanon is highly endemic for neglected tropical diseases (NTDs), and the influx of refugees and foreign labor has increased the risk of importing new NTDs. However, there is limited information available about NTDs in Lebanon, highlighting the need for further research to assess the true burden and take appropriate measures.
