The capacitated lot sizing problem with setup carryover deals with the issue of planning multiple products on a single machine. A setup can be carried over from one period to the next by incorporating the partial sequencing of the first and last product. This study proposes a novel hybrid approach by combining Genetic Algorithms (GAs) and a Fix-and-Optimise heuristic to solve the capacitated lot sizing problem with setup carryover. Besides this, a new initialisation scheme is suggested to reduce the solution space and to ensure a feasible solution. A comparative experimental study is carried out using some benchmark problem instances. The results indicate that the performance of the pure GAs improves when hybridised with the Fix-and-Optimise heuristic. Moreover, in terms of solution quality, promising results are obtained when compared with the recent results in the literature.

Forecasting the biomass-based energy potential using artificial intelligence and geographic information systems: A case study

Ahmet Alp Senocak, Hacer Guner Goren

Summary: To meet sustainable energy demand, this study proposes an integrated method that utilizes statistical data, artificial intelligence, and geographic information systems to forecast the biomass-based energy potential in Turkey. The method was applied to the Acipayam district in Denizli, and it was found that cultivating rapeseed plants on non-utilized arable land and using its wastes yielded the highest energy potential.

Three-phase artificial intelligence-geographic information systems-based biomass network design approach: A case study in Denizli

Ahmet Alp Senocak, Hacer Guner Goren

Summary: This study proposes an integrated approach for the design of biomass supply chain network using artificial intelligence, geographic information systems, multi criteria decision making and mathematical modelling. The methodology was applied to a real case in Denizli, Turkey, and it was found that nine conversion facilities could be opened with 2000 kWh capacity each, with a significant portion of net income coming from electricity sales. Sensitivity analysis showed that fertilizer sales price and discount rate were the most dominant factors affecting net present value.

An integrated fuzzy QFD-MCDM framework for personnel selection problem

E. Ozgormus, A. A. Senocak, H. G. Goren

Summary: In today's competitive world, companies need creative, well-educated and self-confident human resources more than ever to differentiate themselves with continuous improvement. Hiring the right person to the right job plays a significant role on firm growth. This paper proposes a systematic approach to Personnel Selection Problem (PSP) of a textile company in Turkey by considering various performance requirements and criteria, using fuzzy Decision-Making Trial and Evaluation Laboratory (DEMATEL), fuzzy Quality Function Deployment (QFD) and fuzzy Grey Relationship Analysis (GRA) methods. The results show that the proposed method can effectively deal with PSP and help the company establish a systematic and unbiased approach to the problem.
