Summary: Academia, especially early career researchers, is facing a mental health crisis. The COVID-19 pandemic has further exacerbated the burden on the mental health of individuals. A study was conducted to assess the mental health status and satisfaction with PhD training of doctoral researchers before and during the pandemic. The findings showed decreased satisfaction with PhD training and overall well-being, high levels of burnout, significant depressive symptoms, and severe loneliness. Low satisfaction with PhD training was identified as the most prominent predictor for poor mental health. Females and those in individual doctorate programs reported higher levels of burnout. The study highlights the need for systematic adjustments in academia to improve the mental health of early career researchers.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic has put the supply chains for medically critical items and common household goods to the test, particularly in terms of severe shortages of personal protective equipment (PPE) and ventilators in the United States. These shortages have revealed vulnerabilities in the supply chains of essential products during times of crisis, leading to public pressure on corporations to reconsider their supply chains. Drawing from lessons learned during the pandemic, this paper proposes a research agenda and opportunities to develop responsive supply chains to combat future pandemics and major public health emergencies.

Summary: The Covid-19 pandemic and other disruptions have led to criticisms against just-in-time (JIT) practices for operational failures, resulting in calls to adopt just-in-case approach by holding more inventory. The academic community is divided with some arguing that JIT is not resilient while others believe it can still deliver superior performance even during disruptions. Inspired by this debate, the article discusses misconceptions about JIT and presents ways to adapt it for turbulent environments, suggesting that selecting appropriate JIT supply chain segments during disruptions can improve supply chain performance.

The authors focus on innovation in forecasting, supply chain risk management, and product design to enhance supply chain resilience. The study finds that all three areas have evolved in response to the challenges caused by the pandemic, including the shift from statistical forecasting to human-augmented forecasting with visual analytics, the transition from enterprise to supply chain risk management, and the shift from design-for-manufacturability to design-for-adaptability. These approaches must work together to build a resilient supply chain.

Summary: When determining store locations, competing retailers need to consider customers' store choices. Incumbent retailers estimate customer attraction parameters using historical data, while new entrants can observe the location structure of incumbents to estimate these parameters. We propose an inverse optimization approach to help new entrants improve their profits by identifying parameter combinations that lead to observed equilibrium solutions.

Summary: The asymmetric market power between a firm and its partners negatively affects the firm's financial performance. Building relationships with suppliers or customers that have matched market power is the best approach. The strength of the buyer-supplier relationship amplifies the negative impact of asymmetric market power, while the level of relationship embeddedness reduces its negative effect. Moreover, firm-specific institutional, industry, and regional economic heterogeneities also influence the financial impact of asymmetric market power.
