Summary: 17 beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type 2 (17β-HSD2) plays an important role in the regulation of estradiol (E2) availability in adipose tissues by converting E2 into estrone (E1). This study found significant conversion of E2 into E1 in omental (OM) and subcutaneous (SC) adipose tissues of women, with higher expression and activity of 17β-HSD2 in OM compared to SC adipose tissue. Additionally, the activity of this enzyme was negatively associated with body mass index, waist circumference, lean body mass, and SC adipose tissue areas.

Summary: In this study, the effects of sex steroids on the expression of inflammatory mediators in human-derived adipocytes were evaluated. The results showed that non-aromatizable androgen DHT and the aromatase inhibitor anastrozole in combination with testosterone significantly enhanced the expression of inflammatory cytokines induced by LPS. These results confirm the involvement of sex hormones in adipose tissue inflammation and suggest a specific role for non-aromatizable androgens as amplificatory sex hormones of the inflammatory response.

Summary: Sex hormones have different impacts on body composition in men and women. This study aimed to evaluate the association between testosterone, estradiol, and body fat distribution in the general population. The results showed that testosterone was positively associated with lean body mass and negatively associated with fat mass and the android/gynoid ratio in men, while estradiol showed the opposite trend. Among women, testosterone did not have an impact on body composition, but estradiol was positively associated with lean mass and negatively associated with fat mass. These findings highlight the varying effects of sex hormones on specific fat depots between men and women.

Summary: Defects in trophoblastic EMT caused by dysregulation of circTNRC18's interaction with LIN28A play a vital role in the development of preeclampsia. LIN28A overexpression suppresses circTNRC18-mediated inhibition of trophoblast migration, invasion, and EMT, while LIN28A knockdown promotes them. Furthermore, circTNRC18 regulates the intracellular distribution of LIN28A and the expression of insulin-like growth factor II, affecting cell migration and invasion. Targeting the circTNRC18-LIN28A regulatory axis may provide a novel treatment approach for preeclampsia.
