Summary: This study investigated predictors of incident and persistent excessive daytime sleepiness over 5 years in a population-based cohort in Switzerland, and found that factors like male sex, depressive symptoms, poor sleep quality, and obstructive sleep apnea were associated with incident excessive daytime sleepiness, while older age, moderate coffee consumption, leg movement during sleep, and hypertension were protective factors. Further interventional studies are needed to understand the impact of treating these risk factors on excessive daytime sleepiness.

Summary: Otitis media is mainly caused by upper respiratory tract infection and eustachian tube dysfunction. The expression of Toll-like receptors (TLRs) is closely related to the occurrence, recurrence, chronicization, and complications of otitis media, playing an important role in the early response to external antigens.

Summary: This study aimed to identify associations between extreme weather events and the immediate and delayed risks for acute otitis media (AOM)-related emergency department visits (EV). The results showed that prolonged extreme weather conditions, such as temperature, humidity, precipitation, wind speeds, and atmospheric pressure, significantly impacted the risk ratio (RR) for AOM-related EVs. These findings could improve healthcare resource allocation in similar climates and educate patients about the role of environmental factors in AOM.

Summary: The prevalence and risk factors of post-traumatic headache (PTH) attributed to mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) were investigated in this study. The results showed that acute PTH was reported by 60.4% of mTBI patients at 2 weeks post-injury, and 52.4% of those with acute PTH reported persistent PTH at 3 months post-injury. Risk factors for acute PTH included younger age, female sex, fewer years of formal education, computed tomography-positive scans, alteration of consciousness, psychiatric history, and history of migraine, while risk factors for persistent PTH included female sex, fewer years of formal education, and history of migraine.

Summary: This retrospective study examined the natural course of Rathke's cleft cysts (RCCs) and identified the risk factors for their progression. The results showed that 10% of RCCs progressed, 31.9% spontaneously regressed, and the remaining 133 RCCs remained stable. Older age and initially presenting symptom of acute headache were associated with increased risk of RCC progression and spontaneous regression, respectively.

Summary: This study evaluates the additional benefits of social distancing in reducing the prevalence of acute otitis media (AOM) in children, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. The results show that the implementation of social distancing measures in 2020 led to a 63.6% reduction in AOM outpatient attendance, indicating that social distancing, mask usage, and good hand hygiene can significantly decrease the incidence of AOM.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate whether children with AH have a higher prevalence of obesity and to analyze the risk factors for OME in AH children. The results showed that the prevalence of overweight or obesity was higher in children with AH compared to the control group. The size of adenoids, white blood cell count, neutrophil count, monocyte count, and atopic conditions were found to be associated with OME in AH children.

Summary: The impacts of ear disease on animal welfare and behaviour in pet rabbits were investigated. It was found that approximately 28.5% of rabbits had experienced ear conditions, with otitis and excess cerumen being the most common. Lop-eared rabbits were more at risk compared to erect-eared rabbits, and older rabbits were also more susceptible. Improved recognition, treatment, and prevention of ear conditions are necessary to improve welfare standards in pet rabbits.

Summary: The study in Taiwan found that the incidence of herpes zoster was higher during the months of May to October with high ambient temperature and strong ultraviolet radiation. For every 1 degree Celsius increase in ambient temperature per month, the incidence rate of herpes zoster increased by 0.072 per 10,000 persons per month. Similarly, for every 1 MJ m(-2) increase in monthly ultraviolet radiation, the incidence rate of herpes zoster increased by 0.313 per 10,000 persons per month. There is a significant association between ambient temperature, ultraviolet radiation, and the development of herpes zoster.

Summary: Numerous studies have shown that arthroscopic partial meniscectomy (APM) is not (cost-) effective in patients with symptoms attributed to a degenerative meniscus tear. The study found that not performing APM to treat degenerative meniscus tears in the Netherlands can significantly reduce healthcare expenditures by €54 million. Therefore, it is recommended to further reduce the use of APM for this condition.

Summary: This retrospective cohort study examined the histological tumor types, location, incidence, and survival of benign and malignant salivary gland tumors in the Greenlandic Inuit population. The study found that 76% of the tumors were benign, with pleomorphic adenoma being the most common type. Malignant tumors accounted for 24% of the cases, with lymphoepithelial carcinoma being the most common type. The study provides valuable insights into the epidemiology of salivary gland tumors in the Greenlandic Inuit population.

Summary: The purpose of this study was to investigate whether near-infrared autofluorescence image guidance can reduce the incidence of hypoparathyroidism in total thyroidectomy. The results showed that near-infrared autofluorescence imaging can improve the detection rate of parathyroid glands and reduce the rate of hypoparathyroidism, but the difference was not statistically significant. Further studies are needed to confirm the use of near-infrared autofluorescence imaging as an auxiliary tool for parathyroid gland identification.

Summary: Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) is a distinct tumor that mainly occurs in salivary or lacrimal glands, but can also develop in other tissues. ACC tumors from different organs have remarkably similar gene expression profiles, indicating a dominant ACC phenotype induced by genetic and epigenetic regulatory events. A gene expression biomarker was validated in a new cohort of ACC tumors, correctly identifying 98% of the patients with poor survival, suggesting the need for a clinical test to identify high-risk patients.

Summary: The frequency of self-reported middle ear and hearing complaints and vertigo/dizziness in adult Greenlanders was estimated. It was found that there has been a decrease in the frequency of these complaints within a 20-year period. In 1995, the youngest age groups had the highest relative number of ear discharge, while in 2014, the percentage decreased significantly. The oldest age group indicated the lowest relative number of experiences of ear discharge in both 1995 and 2014.

Summary: In this exploratory study on 20 cadaveric bone tumor models, navigated curettage was not found to be more accurate than freehand curettage. However, the presence of remaining tumor indicates that there is still room for improvement in curettage procedures. The novice user was less accurate with navigation compared to freehand, which could be attributed to the learning curve. Furthermore, the expert user employed a different surgical approach, focusing more on complete tumor removal rather than preserving the surrounding bone.
