The aim of this study was to report 2 novel clinical cases of reactive lesions of the pen-implant mucosa associated with titanium dental implants where metal-like particles were observed histologically. In both cases, the lesions were diagnosed as epulis, based on clinical evidence. Extirpation biopsies were carried out. Case I was diagnosed as pyogenic granuloma and case 2 as peripheral giant cell granuloma. The presence of metal-like particles in the tissues suggests that the etiology of the lesions might be related to the corrosion process of the metal structure. This is the first case of pyogenic granuloma to be reported in association with dental implants. All clinical cases of soft tissue lesions associated with implants should be reported to contribute to the understanding of the etiology and pathogeny of these lesions.

Titanium dental implant-related pathologies: A retrospective histopathological study

Maria Luisa Paparella, Mariela Gisele Domingo, Sebastian Ariel Puia, Elisabeth Jacobi-Gresser, Daniel Gustavo Olmedo

Summary: This descriptive histopathological study reviewed 68 cases of peri-implant tissue pathologies associated with titanium dental implants at the School of Dentistry, University of Buenos Aires from 1990 to 2018. A significant number of cases showed the presence of metallic particles, predominantly containing aluminum, titanium, iron, and nickel. The role of metallic particles in the development of these lesions remains unclear.

A collagen-silica-based biocomposite for potential application in bone tissue engineering

Summary: Bone is a hierarchical material that has inspired the design of biopolymer-derived biocomposites for tissue engineering. The study synthesized a collagen-silica-based biocomposite and analyzed its ultrastructure, biodegradability, swelling behavior, and biocompatibility. In an in vivo experimental model, the biocomposite showed good biocompatibility properties and stimulated new bone formation.

Summary: This study evaluated the biological response of lung, liver, and kidneys to acute exposure to titanium dioxide. The results showed increased titanium concentration in the plasma and target organs after one month of exposure. Histopathological analysis revealed the presence of particles, but no structural changes were observed. Oxidative metabolism in the lung, liver, and kidneys showed alterations, with decreased antioxidant enzyme activity in the liver. Determination of serum biochemical markers and analysis of oxidative metabolism were not early bioindicators of tissue damage.

Summary: The tissue response and biocompatibility of UNCD-coated titanium micro-implants were evaluated in a murine model. The histological evaluation showed good tissue integration and no inflammatory response. Although the osseointegration percentage was similar between the UNCD-coated and control groups, the tribological properties of UNCD make it a superior implant coating material.

Synthesis and Evaluation of a Chitosan-Silica-Based Bone Substitute for Tissue Engineering

Maria Alvarez Echazu, Sandra J. Renou, Gisela S. Alvarez, Martin F. Desimone, Daniel G. Olmedo

Summary: In this study, a chitosan-silica-based biocomposite was synthesized and characterized for its physicochemical properties and biocompatibility. The results showed that the biocomposite had good biocompatibility and could act as a template for cellular interactions and extracellular matrix formation, promoting new bone tissue formation.
