From 2001 to 2005, 66 patients referred for perioperative hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBO2) for debridement of necrotic tissue or prevention of radionecrosis were assessed with quality of life measures, before and after completion of HBO2 and surgery. The Medical Outcomes Short Form 36 (SF-36) and Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) showed no significant changes. The European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer Core (EORTC-C30) questionnaire showed significant improvement in pain, global health, and dyspnoea (p = 0.011; p = 0.027; p = 0.008, respectively). The Head and Neck submodule (H&N35) identified significant improvements in teeth, dry mouth and social contact (p = 0.002; p = 0.038; p = 0.029, respectively). The University of Washington Scale (UW), showed significant changes in relation to chewing and shoulders (p = 0.031; p = 0.047). When sub-group analysis using I osteoradionecrosis' and 'dental extraction or implants' was performed on the EORTC and UW data, variations in the patterns of significance were found. Adjunctive HBO2 should be considered for the treatment and prevention of some of the long-term complications of radiotherapy.

So, I told him to look for friends! Barriers and protecting factors that may facilitate inclusion for children with Language Disorder in everyday social settings: Cross-cultural qualitative interviews with parents

Kristine M. Jensen de Lopez, Julie Feilberg, Sofia Baena, Rena Lyons, Sam Harding, Maja Kelic, Inge S. Klatte, Tina C. Mantel, Rama Novogrodsky, Thora S. Ulfsdottir, Krisztina Zajdo, Isabel R. Rodriguez-Ortiz

Summary: Researchers conducted cross-cultural qualitative interviews with parents from nine countries who had children with speech-language disorders, finding that parents believe their children's hidden disabilities lead to social exclusion, and they play crucial roles as advocates in social environments.

Associations between markers of social functioning and depression and quality of life in survivors of head and neck cancer: Findings from the Head and Neck Cancer 5000 study

Joanne M. Patterson, Liya Lu, Laura-Jayne Watson, Sam Harding, Andy R. Ness, Steve Thomas, Andrea Waylen, Miranda Pring, Tim Waterboer, Linda Sharp

Summary: The study found significant associations between markers of social functioning and depression and health-related quality of life among head and neck cancer survivors. Difficulty with social eating and contact was positively correlated with depression and negatively correlated with quality of life. Effective interventions addressing social eating and contact are crucial for improving outcomes for survivors.

A systematic review of early speech interventions for children with cleft palate

Hannah Lane, Sam Harding, Yvonne Wren

Summary: The review suggests that early naturalistic interventions can have positive impacts on the speech development of children with cleft palate with or without cleft lip. However, the overall methodological quality of the publications is weak, and there is a lack of clarity and specificity in terms of therapy technique, delivery, and optimal age of delivery in the current evidence. Future research should use more robust methodological designs to determine the effectiveness of early speech interventions for children born with cleft palate with or without cleft lip.

The Fluency Trust Residential Course for young people who stutter: A pragmatic feasibility study

Anna Prince, Jonathan Marsden, Yvonne Wren, Rosemarie Hayhow, Sam Harding

Summary: A feasibility study was conducted on The Fluency Trust Residential Course (FTRC) for adolescents who stutter. The results showed that recruitment, retention, and outcome measure completion rates were all 100%. The intervention fidelity was 95% and there were no adverse events. The outcome measures demonstrated good test re-test reliability and the acceptability of the intervention by adolescents was high. The conclusion suggests that a future definitive trial of the FTRC is indicated after additional development work and feasibility testing.

Mapping the literature on parent-child language across activity contexts: a scoping review

Caitlin Holme, Sam Harding, Sue Roulstone, Patricia J. Lucas, Yvonne Wren

Summary: This scoping review explores the significance of linguistic interactions between parents and children, as well as the influence of different activity contexts on language use. Results indicate the importance of interaction strategies in children's language development, but future research should focus on ensuring the ecological validity of findings.

The past, present, and future of sleep measurement in mild cognitive impairment and early dementia-towards a core outcome set: a scoping review

Jonathan Blackman, Hamish Duncan Morrison, Katherine Lloyd, Amy Gimson, Luke Vikram Banerjee, Sebastian Green, Rebecca Cousins, Sarah Rudd, Sam Harding, Elizabeth Coulthard

Summary: This scoping review aims to determine how sleep is currently measured and reported in patients with Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) and early dementia. The study found that despite technological advances, questionnaires were still the most commonly used method to measure sleep, and sleep outcome parameters were reported heterogeneously.

Interventions for pre-school children with co-occurring phonological speech sound disorder and expressive language difficulties: A scoping review

Lucy Rodgers, Sam Harding, Rachel Rees, Michael T. Clarke

Summary: This paper provides an overview of interventions for pre-school children with co-occurring phonological SSD and expressive language difficulties. The review identified both integrated interventions and single-domain interventions, with early evidence supporting their effectiveness. However, further high-quality research is needed to enhance the understanding of interventions for this dual profile.

Outcome measures for children with speech sound disorder: an umbrella review protocol

Sam Harding, Sam Burr, Joanne Cleland, Helen Stringer, Yvonne Wren

Summary: This paper presents a protocol for an umbrella review focusing on assessments, interventions and outcomes related to speech sound disorder (SSD) in children. The aim is to identify the most effective care pathways for children with SSD. The protocol includes a detailed search strategy and extraction tool development, following the guidelines of the Joanna Briggs Institute scoping review methods.

Exploring the Experiences of Family Members When a Patient Is Admitted to the ICU with a Severe Traumatic Brain Injury: A Scoping Review

Kati Hayes, Sam Harding, Kirsten Buckley, Bronagh Blackwood, Jos M. Latour

Summary: This scoping review aimed to explore and map the experiences of family members of adult patients with severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) in the ICU. The thematic analysis revealed three themes: communication with the clinical team, uncertainty, and involvement in care. These findings provide clinicians with a deeper understanding and direction for targeted interventions to support family members in the ICU.

Women's and midwives' views on the optimum process for informed consent for research in a feasibility study involving an intrapartum intervention: a qualitative study

Mary Alvarez, Emily J. Hotton, Sam Harding, Jonathan Ives, Joanna F. Crofts, Julia Wade

Summary: This study highlights the complexity of recruitment to intrapartum research and the challenges women face in understanding and making decisions during urgent interventions. The time pressures of intrapartum interventions make recruitment discussions difficult, yet little is known about these interactions. The study proposes a framework for good practice in information provision to address the concerns of women and midwives and ensure fair inclusion in intrapartum trials.

Summary: The study aimed to examine the diagnostic accuracy of mammogram readers to interpret abbreviated breast MRI (abMRI) after a single day of training and compare the performance between experienced and inexperienced readers of full-protocol breast MRI (fpMRI). The results showed that inexperienced readers had lower diagnostic accuracy compared to experienced readers, suggesting the need for additional training.
