Summary: This study investigated the adherence of children with Down syndrome (DS) to the Mediterranean diet, their level of physical activity, and lipid profile. The results showed that higher scores on the diet and physical activity questionnaires were associated with a reduced likelihood of being overweight or obese. Additionally, higher levels of physical activity were inversely related to the probability of finding abnormal HDL values in plasma.

Summary: The aim of this study was to identify the anamnestic and clinical findings that indicate the presence of sleep-related breathing disorders (SRBD) in children. The study found that continuous sleep, developmental delay, mouth breathing, and snoring were important indicators of SRBD in children. Early detection and treatment of SRBD are crucial for children's health.

Summary: The link between migraine and nutrition can be explored from various perspectives, with lifestyle and nutrition playing a significant role in pediatric migraine. Dietary treatments like the ketogenic diet and nutraceuticals may have therapeutic effects on migraine, while a diet that controls weight gain can benefit migraine severity. However, caution should be exercised towards misinformation without scientific basis when discussing the relationship between nutrition and headaches.

Summary: Dietary fibers have immune, cardiovascular, metabolic, and intestinal beneficial effects. They can be found naturally in fruits, vegetables, legumes, and cereals or be used as supplements. Soluble fibers are digested by gut bacteria and have prebiotic effects, while non-soluble fibers improve intestinal transit. The amount and characteristics of fiber requirement in infants and children need further investigation, and the use of fibers in children with gastrointestinal disorders is still limited.

Summary: Functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGIDs) are common in children and adolescents, and there is increasing interest in the role of diet in their treatment. This review focuses on the role of specific diets, such as the low-FODMAP diet, fructose- or lactose-restricted diet, gluten-free diet, and Mediterranean diet, in managing FGIDs like irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), functional abdominal pain (FAP), functional dyspepsia (FD), and functional constipation (FC). The review found a lack of high-quality intervention trials and suggests that while some patients with IBS or FAP may benefit from specific diets, more research is needed.

Summary: This study aimed to assess the Health-Related Quality of Life (HRQoL) of Italian children and their parents with coeliac disease using the Coeliac Disease Dutch Questionnaire (CDDUX). The Italian version of the CDDUX questionnaire was found to be a valid and reliable tool for evaluating HRQoL in children and adolescents with CD, showing significant differences in HRQoL among populations of different nationalities. The main clinical variable affecting HRQoL in both children and parents was found to be lower age.

Summary: The prevalence of child and adolescent obesity has plateaued at high levels in most high-income countries and is increasing in many low-income and middle-income countries. Obesity arises when a mix of genetic and epigenetic factors, behavioural risk patterns and broader environmental and sociocultural influences affect the two body weight regulation systems. Treatment incorporates a respectful, stigma-free and family-based approach involving multiple components, and addresses dietary, physical activity, sedentary and sleep behaviours. Prevention of obesity requires a whole-system approach and joined-up policy initiatives across government departments.

Summary: This study surveyed dietitians currently employed in any capacity in public and private mental health services to explore their role in mental health services and identify barriers and enablers to service delivery. The findings showed that the top tasks conducted by dietitians in mental health services were individual consultations, group programs, and multidisciplinary team meetings. Barriers reported included a lack of awareness of a dietitian's role in mental health and a lack of specific tools for nutrition screening. More training and an increased evidence base would enable better service provision.
