Since the discovery that the ratio of inclusive charged lepton (per-nucleon) cross-sections from a nucleus A to the deuteron is not unity - even in deep inelastic scattering kinematics - a great deal of experimental and theoretical effort has gone into understanding the phenomenon. The EMC effect, as it is now known, shows that even in the most extreme kinematic conditions the effects of the nucleon being bound in a nucleus cannot be ignored. In this paper, we collect the most precise data available for various nuclear to deuteron ratios, as well as provide a commentary on the current status of the theoretical understanding of this thirty year old effect.

EIC detector overview

D. W. Higinbotham

Summary: The Electron Ion Collider will be equipped with detectors in two interaction regions. The first region will meet the physics requirements outlined by the National Academy of Sciences and be ready for beam commissioning by the end of this decade. Plans for a second detector in a complementary region are in progress and expected to be realized a few years after the first detector. Advanced optimization techniques are being employed to enhance the optimization of the detectors.

Summary: The small binding energy of the hypertriton leads to predictions of the non-existence of bound hypernuclei for isotriplet three-body systems such as nn Lambda. However, events reported at GSI suggest the existence of the bound nn Lambda state. Higher sensitivity in investigating the nnA-state was achieved in this experiment, with no significant structures observed and upper limits of the production cross-section of the nnA state obtained. This cross-section result provides valuable information for examining the existence of nn Lambda.

Summary: Precision determinations of the beam-normal single spin asymmetries (A(n)) in the elastic scattering of 0.95 and 2.18 GeV electrons off C-12, Ca-40, Ca-48, and Pb-208 were reported. The measurement results for Ca-40 and Ca-48 are similar to that of C-12, consistent with expectations and validating the theoretical calculations for nuclei with Z ≤ 20. However, the A(n) measurements for Pb-208 show significant disagreement with the results for Z ≤ 20 nuclei, indicating the need for further investigation.

Summary: The MARATHON experiment determines the ratio of the nucleon F-2 structure functions, F-2(n)/F-2(p), through measurements of deep inelastic scattering of electrons from H-3 and He-3 nuclei. The experiment achieves significant improvements compared to previous measurements and compares the results to theoretical calculations and empirical determinations of the ratio.

Precision Moller polarimetry for PREX-2 and CREX

D. E. King, D. C. Jones, C. Gal, D. Gaskell, W. Henry, A. D. Kaplan, J. Napolitano, S. Park, K. D. Paschke, R. Pomatsalyuk, P. A. Souder

Summary: The PREX-2 and CREX experiments are precision measurements of parity violating elastic electron scattering from complex nuclei. The accurate knowledge of the incident electron beam polarization is crucial for these experiments. A Moller polarimeter was used to exceed the required precision of 1%. These measurements are important for understanding theoretical and experimental aspects of nuclear physics.

Summary: The proton, composed of quarks and gluons, is one of the fundamental building blocks of visible matter in the Universe. Previous research focused on the electric charge radius of the proton, while little was known about the mass density dominated by gluons. This study investigated the gravitational density of gluons using a small color dipole and determined the gluonic gravitational form factors of the proton. The results showed a notably smaller mass radius than the electric charge radius, and in some cases, the determined radius agreed well with theoretical predictions.

Summary: This study reveals systematic differences in the values of proton's electric form factors in the low-Q2 region extracted by different experimental and theoretical groups. By utilizing an analytically well-behaved rational function and re-analyzing the electron-proton scattering data, the study shows that the apparent discrepancy can be resolved.

Summary: The E12-14-012 experiment conducted at Jefferson Lab Hall A measured the (e,e'p) cross section in parallel kinematics using a natural argon target. The analysis of the data set corresponding to a beam energy of 2.222 GeV is reported here, covering a range of missing momentum and missing energy. The agreement between the experimental data and Monte Carlo simulations, which included the effects of final state interactions, was found to be satisfactory. The resulting spectral function will be valuable for interpreting neutrino interactions in liquid argon detectors.
