The paper introduces a simple retrofit performed on a case study vessel, with the aim of assessing the retrofit's potential environmental impacts via doing a life cycle assessment. Additionally, the case presented herein strives to evidence the applicability of life cycle assessment (LCA) appraisals within shipyard representatives or managers. The environmental results shown in this paper are related to cost calculations presented for the selected retrofit, underlining the potential environmental impacts from the retrofit, while appraising its economic performance. The paper strives to evidence that significant savings with regard to fuel costs can be achieved by the application of this retrofit to ships with a similar operational profile, but more importantly, the improved operational efficiency and the emission reductions can be noteworthy. Lastly, the results summarised intend to offer an optimistic context towards the implementation of the retrofit at a larger scale, i.e. a section of the existing fleet.

Lifespan cost analysis of alternatives to global sulphur emission limit with uncertainties

Daozheng Huang, Yimin Hua, Sean Loughney, Eduardo Blanco-Davis, Jin Wang

Summary: The research compares the lifespan costs of three main alternatives for complying with the 2020 global sulphur emission regulation, finding that larger vessels, lower discount rates, and higher mixed fuel prices make the scrubber option more attractive. If future refining technology of low-sulphur fuel improves and price differentials decrease, the fuel-switch alternative could be as competitive as using a scrubber in terms of lifespan cost. Additionally, as the discount rate increases, the cost gap between using a scrubber and the other two alternatives gradually decreases.

An Evaluation of the Effects of Human Factors on Pilotage Operations Safety

Hassan Oraith, Eddie Blanco-Davis, Zaili Yang, Ben Matellini

Summary: This paper investigates the impact of human factors on the safety of maritime pilotage operations through literature review, case analysis, and expert interviews, developing a structural hierarchy diagram for identified risk factors. Findings benefit the maritime industry by identifying causal factors contributing to maritime pilotage disasters and offering effective risk reduction strategies to reduce human error during pilotage operations.

Incorporation of seafarer psychological factors into maritime safety assessment

Shiqi Fan, Eduardo Blanco-Davis, Stephen Fairclough, Jinfen Zhang, Xinping Yan, Jin Wang, Zaili Yang

Summary: Psychological factors are a critical cause of human errors in various sectors, but little research has been done in the maritime industry, despite the significant contribution of human errors to shipping accidents. This study introduces a conceptual framework for assessing seafarer psychological factors using neurophysiological analysis. The framework enables quantitative assessment of psychological factors, and can be used to test, verify, and train seafarers' behaviors for ship safety.

Life-Cycle and Applicational Analysis of Hydrogen Production and Powered Inland Marine Vessels

Matthew Knight, Eduardo Blanco-Davis, Oliver Platt, Milad Armin

Summary: This report aims to analyze the potential of hydrogen as a future fuel source by performing a life-cycle assessment. The results show that hydrogen has great potential to convert marine transport to operating off green fuels when powered through low-carbon energy sources. However, without global infrastructure change, hydrogen will remain as a potential fuel rather than a common one.

A Study on the Viability of Fuel Cells as an Alternative to Diesel Fuel Generators on Ships

Hossein Seyfi, David Hitchmough, Milad Armin, Eddie Blanco-Davis

Summary: This study explores methods for reducing air pollution in the shipping industry, particularly in port areas. It investigates the potential use of fuel cells as a substitute for diesel generators. Ports face significant environmental pollution challenges, making further research on fuel cell technologies necessary. The study compares different types of commercial fuel cells suitable for a case study vessel, ultimately identifying the proton-exchange membrane cell type as the most suitable option. Based on the input fuel, ammonia-based hydrogen storage and ammonia reforming unit for pure hydrogen production were found to be promising options. The study provides an integrated fuel cell module and evaluates the economic, environmental, and maintenance aspects of implementing the proton-exchange membrane fuel cell module. Additionally, it highlights the space requirements for implementing fuel cell technology at sea.

The Role of the Prefrontal Cortex and Functional Connectivity during Maritime Operations: An fNIRS study

Shiqi Fan, Eduardo Blanco-Davis, Jinfen Zhang, Alan Bury, Jonathan Warren, Zaili Yang, Xinping Yan, Jin Wang, Stephen Fairclough

Summary: The study found that neurovascular activation in the right lateral area of the prefrontal cortex changed significantly during watchkeeping and decision-making tasks. Graph-theoretic analysis showed that connectivity density decreased during decision-making but increased during preparation for evasive maneuvers. Network measures were associated with behavioral outcomes, affecting the ability to spot target vessels and perform evasive maneuvers.
