Summary: This study aimed to investigate novel genetic variants associated with the variability of warfarin dose in the Korean population. The results showed that VKORC1, NKX2-6 rs310279, FRAS1 rs4386623, and FAM201A rs1890109 were associated with stable warfarin dose requirement. The study highlighted the importance of both genetic and non-genetic factors in the variability of warfarin dose.

Summary: Stroke is the second leading cause of death globally, with most cases being ischemic. Increased levels of plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1) have been linked to higher risk of stroke. A case-control study in South Korea identified specific variations in the PAI-1 gene that are significantly associated with higher prevalence of ischemic stroke. These genetic variations could potentially serve as clinical biomarkers for stroke and improve patient prognosis and management.

Summary: In this study, a genetic variant associated with disease progression in idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) was identified, and the PKN2 gene was proposed as a potential target for novel therapeutic approaches. This finding provides insights into the biological mechanisms underlying IPF and offers potential implications for its treatment.

Summary: The study identified an association between the serotonin transporter gene SLC6A4 HTTLPR polymorphism and criminal aggression in Pakistani prisoners, with the L/L and L-A/L-A genotypes being linked to higher aggression scores. Functional effects were demonstrated for the rs25531 polymorphism in HTTLPR and other serotonergic polymorphisms in different brain regions and peripheral tissues. Further research is needed to replicate and understand the biological mechanisms underlying this relationship.

Summary: The study found that preferences for fruits and soy products are negatively associated with the risk of IS, while lower life satisfaction is positively associated with the risk of IS. Adding these factors to a basic CVD risk model can improve the discriminative ability and reclassification for IS.

Summary: The study investigated the association between two SNPs in the ABO gene and the risk of small artery occlusion stroke in the southern Chinese Han population. The results showed that the rs532436 polymorphism was significantly associated with SAO, while the rs505922 polymorphism showed no significant association. This suggests a potential genetic influence on SAO in this population.

Summary: This study found associations between certain clinical laboratory parameters and genetic polymorphisms such as ACE I/D, β-Fg-455 A/G, and PAI-1 4G/5G, which are closely related to the risk of IS. The D allele of ACE I/D may be associated with elevated levels of total cholesterol and LDL-C. Elevated levels of blood glucose, triglycerides, and LDL-C are risk factors for IS.

Summary: Although anticoagulation significantly reduces the risk of stroke in patients with atrial fibrillation, a proportion of patients on anticoagulation still experience ischaemic stroke. Understanding the potential mechanisms of stroke despite anticoagulation is crucial in order to tailor individualized treatment strategies for secondary prevention.

Summary: This review focuses on the therapeutic effects of functional electrical stimulation (FES) on physical performance and skeletal muscle function in post-stroke older adults. FES has been found to restore muscle strength, support weight-bearing and upright posture, and improve balance. It may also be effective in preventing muscle atrophy. However, further studies are needed to confirm these findings in this specific population.

Summary: This study aimed to examine the relationship between nutritional biomarkers and heart rate variability (HRV) parameters in stroke patients. The results showed that HRV parameters were significantly lower in the nutritional biomarker-deficient groups. Serum albumin, prealbumin, and transferrin levels were associated with autonomic nervous system (ANS) function, as measured by HRV, and their deficiency may be a predictive factor for the severity of ANS dysfunction in stroke patients.

Summary: Depressive and somatic symptoms are commonly observed in patients with traumatic brain injury (TBI). This study aimed to investigate the relationship between autonomic nervous system (ANS) dysfunction, depression, and somatic symptoms in TBI patients. The results showed a significant association between reduced HRV, indicative of ANS dysfunction, and the severity of depressive and somatic symptoms. These findings suggest that autonomic dysfunction may contribute to the development and severity of depressive and somatic symptoms in patients with TBI.
