Summary: This study presents a surface characterization of the modified MPL of TiO2-CNF-CB and discusses in detail the mechanism on the power density drop due to increment of methanol concentration. The study also tests the performance and stability of the modified MPL. The results show that the mixture of TiO2-CNF-CB improved the stability of the DMFC over long-term performance testing.

Summary: In the structure of mu DMFC, the anode diffusion layer composed of reduced graphene oxide/carbon paper (rGO/CP) plays a crucial role in improving fuel cell performance. The rGO/CP not only reduces the resistance of the cell, but also decreases methanol crossover, enabling the cell to operate stably at higher concentrations for a longer duration.

Summary: In this study, various variables affecting the performance of passive micro direct methanol fuel cell were systematically investigated through experiments and simulations. The results showed that vertical stripe pattern (VSP) was preferred for both anodes and cathodes. Additionally, external environmental conditions such as vibration frequency, cell orientation, environmental temperature, and atmospheric pressure were thoroughly discussed. Optimized fabrication, assembly, and operation parameters were proposed to facilitate the wide application of high-performance and durable passive mu DMFC for portable applications.

Summary: The study found that in an air-breathing micro direct methanol fuel cell, having anode catalysts only on the proton-exchange membrane showed superior performance compared to having anode catalysts on both the membrane and channel walls. Additionally, increasing the anode catalyst loading on channel walls resulted in decreased cathode potential, impacting overall fuel cell performance.

Summary: The electrochemical behavior of direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs) is influenced by the concentration of methanol. Monitoring the methanol concentration in the fuel circulation loop is crucial for the efficient operation of DMFC systems. This study presents a robust electrochemical methanol sensing technique that is not affected by temperature, cell degradation, and membrane electrode assembly (MEA) type. The proposed method achieves high accuracy and is expected to enhance the reliability and control logic of DMFC systems.

Summary: Direct-methanol fuel cell (DMFC) systems are relatively simple, but accurately controlling the mixture of methanol and water is a key challenge. Computational fluid dynamics can provide fundamental understanding of this. This paper presents a three-dimensional, steady-state, two-phase, multi-component and non-isothermal DMFC model that can account for various transport phenomena. The model is validated against experimental measurements and used to study the impact of volume porosity and capillary pressure on performance.
