Summary: There is a widely held belief that China's socialist economy had high rates of extreme poverty, but capitalist reforms in the 1980s and 1990s brought rapid progress. However, this narrative is based on World Bank estimates that have been criticized for ignoring the actual cost of meeting basic needs. A review of data on the share of people unable to afford a subsistence basket shows that China's extreme poverty rate from 1981 to 1990 was comparatively lower than other capitalist economies at the time. Moreover, the capitalist reforms in the 1990s led to an increase in extreme poverty in China, indicating that market reforms can threaten people's ability to meet basic needs.

Summary: This paper investigates the effects of local spillovers on the patenting activity and new innovation sales of Chinese firms during a period of rapid economic reform. The study shows that local spillovers between co-located firms in related industries encourage firm innovation outcomes, especially for firms that diversify into new related technological domains. The results also highlight the importance of market-oriented reforms in encouraging innovation-enhancing technological related spillovers.

Summary: The utilization efficiency of agricultural water resources has a significant impact on agricultural development. However, the low utilization efficiency of agricultural water resources is a common problem in developing countries due to long-term wastage. This study explores the impact of farmers' education level and market-oriented reforms on improving the utilization efficiency of agricultural water resources, using panel data from China for the 2007-2020 period. The results indicate that promoting farmers' education levels and deepening market-oriented reforms can enhance the utilization efficiency of agricultural water resources, but the influence of education level weakens with the advancement of market-oriented reforms.

Summary: This study examines how multiple healthcare reforms affect catastrophic health spending of low-income households in China. The findings suggest that while expansion-oriented policies increase the incidence of catastrophic health spending for poor households, constraint-oriented policies can lower it. Strong and coordinated supply-side reforms towards cost containment are necessary for achieving essential financial protection of the poor.

Summary: This study uses the time-varying parameter vector autoregression approach to investigate the dynamic volatility interactions among the stock, commodity, and carbon markets in China, with a specific focus on the impact of extreme event shocks on market interactions. The results reveal a bidirectional Granger causality between stock and commodity market volatility, while these markets unidirectionally Granger cause carbon market volatility. Additionally, the effects of the carbon market on stock and commodity market volatility fluctuate significantly, whereas the interactions between the stock and commodity markets remain relatively smooth. Sudden extreme events have a significant impact on market volatility interactions.

Summary: This paper examines the role of government policy in shaping a growing economy through factors of production, focusing on land as an important factor. By developing a quantitative model with endogenous land price policy regimes, the study incorporates China's transition from dual-track land pricing to land price discrimination by use. The model also captures key economic reforms such as the introduction of non-SOEs and the reform of SOEs in the manufacturing sector. Using calibrated models, the effects of these reforms on China's economy are quantified and consistent with observed indicators.
