Demographic and prosocial intrapersonal characteristics of biobank participants and refusers: the findings of a survey in the Netherlands

Summary: Health-related values play a crucial role in participation decisions in genetic research. There is no significant difference in general prosociality between participants and refusers, emphasizing the importance of addressing communication and trust issues in recruitment strategies. Future research should explore how prosocial intrapersonal characteristics drive participation decisions and relate to contextual attributes.

Summary: Genetic determinants play a role in the development of co-morbid diseases in T2D patients, with certain SNPs identified to be associated with them. The study found that CVD was most common, followed by chronic eye disease, with potential involvement of specific SNPs like rs1870849 and rs8051326 in chronic eye disease incidence in T2D patients. Further research is needed to validate these associations.

Motives for withdrawal of participation in biobanking and participants' willingness to allow linkages of their data

Reinder Broekstra, Judith L. Aris-Meijer, Els L. M. Maeckelberghe, Ronald P. Stolk, Sabine Otten

Summary: The study found that individuals' motives for participation or withdrawal from data donation in biobanks were mainly based on perceptions of benefits or harm to society and themselves. General values and trust played crucial roles in participation, withdrawal, and willingness to permit data linkage, but were associated differently with motives. The findings highlighted the complexity and uniqueness of decision-making processes related to participation or withdrawal from biobanking, suggesting new directions for recruitment, retention, and safeguarding strategies.
