Dietary Patterns in Early Childhood and the Risk of Childhood Overweight: The GECKO Drenthe Birth Cohort

Summary: Limited and inconsistent evidence exists on the associations between dietary patterns and overweight during childhood. The study found that a dietary pattern high in energy-dense and low-fiber ultra-processed foods at age 3 is associated with overweight and a high BMI-SDS later in childhood. Although high adherence to both 'minimally processed foods' and 'ultra-processed foods' patterns was related to BMI-SDS, a stronger association was observed for the 'ultra-processed foods' pattern.

A prospective analysis of physical activity and mental health in children: the GECKO Drenthe cohort

Summary: This study found that greater physical activity in early childhood is associated with fewer peer problems in middle childhood. For boys, higher activity levels in early childhood may be an indicator of higher hyperactivity in middle childhood. Increased sedentary time is linked to higher peer problems scores in both boys and girls. However, it is important to note that no significant associations were found between physical activity and other mental health outcomes.

Summary: This study aims to assess the impact of suspected preterm labor during pregnancy on cardiometabolic profile and neurodevelopment during childhood. The study will include children whose mothers experienced suspected preterm labor and paired controls. Neurodevelopmental, cardiovascular, and metabolic assessments will be conducted to investigate the effects. The findings of this study will contribute to understanding the long-term consequences of suspected preterm labor on child health.

Regional variation in lifestyle patterns and BMI in young children: the GECKO Drenthe cohort

Summary: This study aimed to explore the association between lifestyle patterns in young children and the development of childhood overweight. The results showed that adhering to a lifestyle pattern characterized by low screen time, high sleep duration, and a healthy diet was associated with a lower risk of overweight and lower BMI scores. However, no associations were found for patterns characterized by high activity or high outdoor play. Spatial clustering of childhood overweight was observed, suggesting the influence of neighborhood factors.

Early childhood factors associated with obesity at age 8 in Vietnamese children: The Young Lives Cohort Study

Summary: In Vietnam, there has been an increase in childhood overweight/obesity prevalence. Factors such as male sex, higher wealth, and urban residence are significantly associated with overweight/obesity risk at age 8. Additionally, early nutrition practices like frequent consumption of powdered milk, honey/sugar, fast foods, and packaged sweets are linked to childhood obesity, while breastfeeding for 6 months or longer is protective.

Centre-based childcare in early childhood and growth in later childhood: a prospective cohort study

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the association between attending centre-based childcare in early childhood and body mass index in later childhood. The findings showed that children who attended full-time centre-based childcare at the ages of 4 and 7 had a lower body mass index and decreased odds of overweight and obesity. This association was particularly strong for children from lower income families. The study suggests that centre-based childcare could be an early intervention for preventing childhood obesity.

Maternal tobacco smoking and childhood obesity in South Africa: A cohort study

Summary: This study examines the association between maternal tobacco use and body weight abnormalities among South African children. The results show that children of smoking mothers are more likely to be obese, overweight, or at risk of becoming overweight. Summary: Genetic determinants play a role in the development of co-morbid diseases in T2D patients, with certain SNPs identified to be associated with them. The study found that CVD was most common, followed by chronic eye disease, with potential involvement of specific SNPs like rs1870849 and rs8051326 in chronic eye disease incidence in T2D patients. Further research is needed to validate these associations.

Summary: The study found that individuals' motives for participation or withdrawal from data donation in biobanks were mainly based on perceptions of benefits or harm to society and themselves. General values and trust played crucial roles in participation, withdrawal, and willingness to permit data linkage, but were associated differently with motives. The findings highlighted the complexity and uniqueness of decision-making processes related to participation or withdrawal from biobanking, suggesting new directions for recruitment, retention, and safeguarding strategies.
