Summary: This study used network analysis to identify the core symptoms of adolescent anorexia nervosa (AN) and explored their relationship with parents. The core symptoms included desiring weight loss, dietary restraint, and feeling fat, while bridge symptoms were parental beliefs about their responsibility to renourish their child, adolescent discomfort eating in front of others, and adolescent dietary restraint. These findings can inform improvements in family-based treatment.

Summary: This study found that common demographic and clinical factors do not predict treatment outcomes for adolescent anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa in family-based treatment (FBT), with the exception of prior treatment history. This suggests that providers should consider referring patients to FBT regardless of socioeconomic or demographic factors.

Summary: This study investigated the cognitive and attentional biases towards food in individuals with anorexia nervosa (AN) using magnetoencephalography (MEG) technology. The results revealed that although AN patients rated high-calorie food as less palatable, they showed increased neural activity in the early stages of food processing, indicating heightened attentional response. This increased appetitive response to food may serve as an adaptive mechanism in a state of undernourishment.

Summary: Eating disorders are serious psychiatric illnesses with high mortality rates. Family-based treatment is recommended as the first-line approach for adolescents with restrictive eating disorders due to its effectiveness and cost efficiency. This treatment method has been successfully adapted for use in various levels of care.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the role of attachment and mentalization in predicting treatment outcome for adolescent anorexia nervosa. The findings suggest that parents' excessive certainty about mental states may predict poor treatment outcome, while adolescents' lack of clarity about their own feelings may predict positive outcome. Higher alliance scores at 1 month were associated with positive outcome and attachment security and mentalization.

Summary: Background research shows that family therapy and multi-family therapy are effective treatments for adolescents with anorexia nervosa. However, little is known about the experiences of young people receiving these treatments in an inpatient setting. This study interviewed five young people receiving treatment on the AN pathway in an inpatient unit, and identified four superordinate themes: 'Process of Understanding', 'Reviving Connection', 'Emerging from the Eating Disorder', and 'Development of I'. The results highlight the importance of both the individual and the role of others in the treatment process, and can inform future service developments.

Summary: The tailored stepped-care model based on family preference and clinical need for adolescents with anorexia nervosa achieved encouraging rates of remission at the end of treatment. This study provides important support for future clinical trials of stepped-care models for adolescents with AN.

Summary: Eating disorders have a prolonged course with significant morbidity. Primary care providers play a crucial role in early identification and treatment, especially for adolescents from diverse backgrounds who may be at risk of delayed care. Integration of eating disorder treatment within primary care settings could lead to improved detection, engagement, and retention in treatment.

Summary: Recovery and remission rates of adolescent anorexia nervosa following Family Based Treatment have seen a decline, prompting the need for innovation in treatment variations and alternatives. A new treatment framework, Adolescent and Parent Treatment, combines family-based and individual treatment models to focus on physical and psychological recovery simultaneously, offering tailored psychological modules for adolescents.

Summary: Fidelity is crucial for evaluating outcomes of evidence-based practices, with expert and peer ratings showing the best agreement. Challenges may exist in accurate parent ratings, but therapist self-rating or peer rating are pragmatic, efficient, and reliable approaches for fidelity assessment in real-world clinical settings.

Summary: Emotional availability (EA) is a complex concept describing the emotional bond between parents and child, and it refers to support, sensitivity, warmth and closeness. This study aims to explore the perception of mothers' and fathers' EA of adolescents with anorexia nervosa (AN) and any differences between the two subtypes of binge-purge (B/P) or restrictive (R) AN. Furthermore, it investigates the association of parental EA with AN symptomatology and with patients' perception of family functioning. Results show no difference between AN subtypes, but a greater perception of mother when compared to father EA was found. The EA construct was found to be associated with greater positive family functioning.

Summary: Formulation, or case conceptualisation, is the collaborative sense-making process that clinicians are constantly engaging in, but may not always prioritize in clinical practice. This process is essential for understanding a patient's specific difficulties, establishing treatment goals, and effectively reviewing treatment progress.

Summary: The Eating Disorder-15 for Youth (ED-15-Y) scale showed excellent psychometric properties, including reliability, sensitivity to change, and convergent validity in youth with eating disorders. It may serve as a valuable tool for assessing eating disorder psychopathology in young individuals aged 8 and above.

Summary: The study aims to test the effectiveness of family-based treatment on economically disadvantaged and racially diverse youth; by training therapists and providing long-term supervision to help them adapt to the treatment needs of low-income families within the community setting; by understanding clinician adaptations and participant feedback, it aims to advance treatment of eating disorders and service improvements in publicly-funded mental health systems.

Summary: This study aims to understand the impact of inpatient treatment on parental self-efficacy for adolescents with restrictive eating disorders. The results showed that parental self-efficacy did not deteriorate during the hospitalization and increased after discharge. Parental self-efficacy was not directly associated with clinical outcomes, but the time factor significantly predicted treatment effectiveness.

Summary: The study aimed to examine the psychometric properties of the Parent Eating Disorder Examination Questionnaire (PEDE-Q) in order to improve the assessment of eating disorders among youth by involving parents. Results showed that the PEDE-Q has good psychometric properties and provides incremental information for the assessment and diagnosis of adolescents with eating disorders, particularly those with anorexia nervosa.

Summary: The study compared the recovery outcomes of individuals with atypical anorexia nervosa (atypical AN) and anorexia nervosa (AN) after one year. It found that those with atypical AN had slower weight gain and remained further from their pre-illness weight. There were no significant differences in psychological recovery, resumption of menses, or rehospitalization rates between the two groups. The findings highlight the limited understanding of recovery in atypical AN and the need for new recovery assessment metrics.
