Asphaltene-rich solid bitumen was identified within the pore spaces of the Middle Jurassic Khatatba sandstone reservoir in the Tut Field, Shoushan Basin, Egypt. Despite good reservoir properties have been detected, the solid bitumen forms barriers in the reservoir, which prevents economic petroleum production. Petrographical and organic geochemical techniques were applied in order to characterize the source rock of the bitumen and its formation mechanisms. Organic geochemical results confirm the presence of actively migrating non-biodegraded hydrocarbons within the Khatatba sandstones. Biomarker data suggest that the solid bitumen originated from a marine shale source rock that was deposited in mildly anoxic to suboxic conditions. Biomarker oil-source rock correlation with the organic-rich sediments of the Khatatba Formation indicates that the shale and coaly shale within the Khatatba Formation are an effective source rock in the area. The natural deasphalting is the predominant mechanism for the formation of the asphaltene rich solid bitumen in the Khatatba sandstones. Adsorption of asphaltenes onto authigenic kaolinite played a major role in the fixation of bitumen. Furthermore, gas deasphalting caused by gas injection may have contributed to a phase change in the reservoir fluid and deposition of solid bitumen. The injected gas is generated from Khatatba Type III kerogen or older source rocks in the Shoushan Basin during the mature stage of hydrocarbon generation. (c) 2012 Elsevier B.V. Mohamed Ragab Shalaby

Summary: The reservoir characteristics and hydraulic flow unit properties of the Khatatba Formation in Qasr field, Western Desert, Egypt were investigated using various methods to analyze and characterize the sandstone. Samples from three different wells showed that the sandstone can be classified into three rock types, where Rock type I has the best storage capacity and permeability, while Rock type III is the poorest quality reservoir.

Summary: The characteristics of the source rocks in the early to late Miocene Belait Formation of Brunei Darussalam were evaluated utilizing Rock-Eval, biomarker analyses, and organic petrography. The results showed that coal and some carbonaceous samples from the formation have good generating potential, while non-coal samples generally have lower potential. The facies analysis suggested a mangrove setting in a lower delta plain for the deposition of coals, with mostly herbaceous and arboreal plants growing, under predominantly oxic and brackish conditions.

PhaseKinetics for assessing the compositional evolution of petroleum generated from the early to Late Miocene source rock, Belait Formation, Brunei-Muara district, Brunei Darussalam

Summary: The study investigated the petroleum generation kinetics of the Early to Late Miocene Belait Formation in Brunei-Muara district using the PhaseKinetic approach. The source rock characteristics indicate mainly type III-II and type III kerogens, with petroleum grading from paraffinic-naphthenic-aromatic high wax to gas and condensate. Pyrolysis data suggest that hydrocarbon generation occurs at temperatures ranging from 105-120 degrees C for 10% transformation ratio, with the end of generation expected at temperatures above 170 degrees C.

1D basin modeling and hydrocarbon generation potential of the Late Carboniferous Limburg Group formations, Northwest European Basin, Netherlands

Surya Tejasvi Thota, Mohamed Ragab Shalaby

Summary: The Carboniferous rock samples of the Limburg Group formations were studied to investigate their source rock characteristics and hydrocarbon generative potential. The study found that these formations have excellent potential as a source of hydrocarbons, with total organic carbon ranging from 0.31% to 83.56%. The analysis also revealed that the kerogen in these formations is type II-III and type III, which generate gas prominently.

Summary: The aim of this study is to characterize the source rocks of the Latrobe Group's formations in the Gippsland Basin. The results show that the source rocks have good organic abundance and hydrocarbon generative potential. The study also reveals the depositional environment and hydrocarbon generation history of the source rocks. This study is important for understanding the burial history, hydrocarbon generation, and development of hydrocarbon fields in the Gippsland Basin.
