Percutaneous Left Ventricular Assist Device Leads to Heart Rhythm Stabilisation in Cardiogenic Shock: Results from the Dresden Impella Registry

Johannes Mierke, Tobias Loehn, Georg Ende, Sabrina Jahn, Silvio Quick, Uwe Speiser, Stefanie Jellinghaus, Christian Pfluecke, Axel Linke, Karim Ibrahim

Summary: The study investigated the effects of LV unloading on SHRD in patients with refractory CS. Results showed that 19 patients with SHRD immediately transitioned to a stable heart rhythm after insertion of a micro-axial heart pump, with some not requiring additional defibrillation. Patients with HRS required more frequent and longer resuscitation compared to those without HRS.

Perioperative Two-Dimensional Left Ventricular Global Longitudinal Strain in Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery: A Prospective Observational Pilot Study

Jakob Labus, Johan Winata, Torsten Schmidt, Joachim Nicolai, Christopher Uhlig, Kunislav Sveric, Konstantin Alexiou, Markus Scholz, Jens Fassl

Summary: This study aimed to compare the left ventricular global longitudinal strain in patients during different perioperative phases and found that two-dimensional left ventricular global longitudinal strain changed with different surgical procedures during the perioperative period.

Simple periprocedural precautions to reduce Doppler microembolic signals during AF ablation

Marian Christoph, David Poitz, Christian Pfluecke, Mathias Forkmann, Yan Huo, Thomas Gaspar, Steffen Schoen, Karim Ibrahim, Silvio Quick, Carsten Wunderlich

Summary: The study found that during atrial fibrillation ablation using irrigated, point-by-point RF ablation, a large number of microembolic signals were detected in transcranial ultrasound, especially during RF current application. The number of MES depends on the total procedure time and the reached ACT during ablation. The use of contact force monitoring may reduce MES during RF ablation.

Evaluation of systemic inflammation in response to remote ischemic preconditioning in patients undergoing transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR)

Kun Zhang, Willi Troeger, Matthias Kuhn, Stephan Wiedemann, Karim Ibrahim, Christian Pfluecke, Krunoslav M. Sveric, Robert Winzer, Dieter Fedders, Tobias F. Ruf, Ruth H. Strasser, Axel Linke, Silvio Quick, Felix M. Heidrich

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the impact of remote ischemic preconditioning (RIPC) on systemic inflammation associated with transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR). The results showed that systemic inflammation occurred in 66% of patients after TAVR, and RIPC did not reduce its incidence or improve patient survival associated with inflammation within 6 months.

Purposeful use of multimodality imaging in the diagnosis of caseous mitral annular calcification: a case series report

Krunoslav Michael Sveric, Ivan Platzek, Elena Golgor, Ralf-Thorsten Hoffmann, Axel Linke, Stefanie Jellinghaus

Summary: Caseous mitral annular calcification (CMAC) is a rare condition that is often misdiagnosed as a cardiac tumor or abscess. This study reports on 6 patients with CMAC who were accurately diagnosed using a combination of echocardiography, cardiac magnetic resonance imaging, and cardiac computed tomography. Non-invasive multimodality imaging plays a crucial role in diagnosing CMAC and preventing unnecessary interventions.

Calculation of Aortic VAlve and LVOT Areas by a Modified Continuity Equation Using Different Echocardiography Methods: The CAVALIER Study

Tobias Friedrich Ruf, Beatrice Elise Cannard, Ruth H. Strasser, Axel Linke, Krunoslav M. Sveric

Summary: This study compared the left ventricular outflow tract area (A(LVOT)) calculated using standard and three-dimensional echocardiography, and its use in standard and modified continuity equation to calculate the aortic valve area (A(AV)). The results showed that measurements and calculations based on two-dimensional echocardiography systematically underestimated the A(LVOT) and A(AV), while correct anatomical assessment can be achieved using three-dimensional echocardiography.

Single-Site Experience with an Automated Artificial Intelligence Application for Left Ventricular Ejection Fraction Measurement in Echocardiography

Krunoslav Michael Sveric, Roxana Botan, Zouhir Dindane, Anna Winkler, Thomas Nowack, Christoph Heitmann, Leonhard Schleussner, Axel Linke

Summary: We investigated the feasibility of using an artificial intelligence application based on convolutional neural network methods to automatically select views and measure left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) from echocardiography exams. Compared to the manual measurement method, the AI method showed accurate measurement, good repeatability, and reliability, but it took longer analysis time.

Benefit of 3D Vena Contracta Area over 2D-Based Echocardiographic Methods in Quantification of Functional Mitral Valve Regurgitation

Vinzenz M. Jungels, Felix M. Heidrich, Christian Pfluecke, Axel Linke, Krunoslav M. Sveric

Summary: This study aimed to validate the application value of three-dimensional vena contracta area (3D VCA) in functional mitral valve regurgitation (FMR). The results showed that the 3D VCA had high consistency with the conventional two-dimensional effective regurgitation orifice area (EROA) method and demonstrated better stability in non-circular regurgitation defects.

Accuracy of Devereaux and Teichholz formulas for left ventricular mass calculation in different geometric patterns: comparison with cardiac magnetic resonance imaging

Krunoslav Michael Sveric, Baris Cansiz, Anna Winkler, Stefan Ulbrich, Georg Ende, Felix Heidrich, Michael Kaliske, Axel Linke, Stefanie Jellinghaus

Summary: This study compared the accuracy of two formulas, Devereaux formula (DEV) and Teichholz formula (TEICH), in calculating left ventricular myocardial mass in echocardiography. It was found that TEICH method better reflected the different patterns of left ventricular remodeling compared to DEV method, making it more suitable for clinical practice.

The Impact of Right Atrial Size to Predict Success of Direct Current Cardioversion in Patients With Persistent Atrial Fibrillation

Christoph Doring, Utz Richter, Stefan Ulbrich, Carsten Wunderlich, Micaela Ebert, Sergio Richter, Axel Linke, Krunoslav Michael Sveric

Summary: This study compared right atrial (RA) and left atrial (LA) size for the prediction of direct current cardioversion (DCCV) success in atrial fibrillation (AF). The results showed that right atrial area is a more accurate and reliable predictor of immediate DCCV success compared to left atrial size.
