We studied systematically, for the first time, the utility of the six-minute walk test (6MWT) in Chagas disease. The walked distance at 6MWT correlated negatively with the increased circulating levels of monocyte chemoattractant protein (MCP-1, r=-0.358, p=0.04) and natriuretic peptide type B (BNP, r=-0.349, p=0.04), as well as positively with ejection fraction deterioration (r=0.451, p=0.004), indicating that submaximal functional capacity of chagasic patients is related to the severity of the cardiopathy. 6MWT may constitute an auxiliary tool in the evaluation of the clinical status of Chagas disease patients. Effects of commercial amniotic membrane extract on the re-epithelialization time and the early expression of matrix metalloproteinase-9 in cats with experimentally induced corneal ulcers

Bruna Carvalho Silveira, Alexandre Pinto Ribeiro, Fabio Dumit Pizzinatto, Paloma Moraes Lobo, Hanna Rodrigues Miranda, Nathalia de Assis Pereira

Summary: This study found that the instillation of a commercial amniotic membrane extract did not accelerate corneal wound healing or suppress the early expression of MMP-9 in the tears of cats with experimentally induced superficial ulcerative keratitis.

Hyperphosphorylated Tau in Mesial Temporal Lobe Epilepsy: a Neuropathological and Cognitive Study

Eliana C. B. Toscano, Erica L. M. Vieira, Lea T. Grinberg, Natalia P. Rocha, Joseane A. S. Brant, Regina S. Paradela, Alexandre V. Giannetti, Claudia K. Suemoto, Renata E. P. Leite, Ricardo Nitrini, Milene A. Rachid, Antonio L. Teixeira

Summary: Temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) is associated with cognitive deficits, and this study investigates the underlying neuronal basis. The researchers found that an increase in p-tau burden is potentially involved in cognitive deficits in mesial TLE, particularly attention impairment and seizure frequency.

Summary: This study found that bipolar disorder type 1 (BD1) and behavioral-variant frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD) have similar deficits in social cognition functions. The results of the Facial Emotion Recognition (FER) and Modified Faux-Pas (mFP) tests can be used to differentiate between the two disorders.

Acute exercise modulates the inflammatory response in adipose tissue in both lean and obese mice

Debora Romualdo Lacerda, Albena Nunes-Silva, Ana Leticia Malheiros Silveira, Katia Anunciacao Costa, Debora Fernandes Rodrigues, Michele Macedo Moraes, Vanessa Pinho, Gustavo Batista Menezes, Mauro Martins Teixeira, Samuel Penna Wanner, Danusa Dias Soares, Adaliene Versiani Matos Ferreira

Summary: This study investigated the effect of acute exercise on the inflammatory response in adipose tissue of lean and obese mice. Acute exercise enhanced the levels of IL-6 and tumor necrosis factor-a in the adipose tissue of lean mice, while no changes were observed in proinflammatory cytokines in obese mice. However, the levels of IL-13, IL-4, and IL-10 were increased in obese mice after exercise. These findings suggest that acute exercise promotes an inflammatory response in adipose tissue of lean mice, but elicits an anti-inflammatory response in adipose tissue of obese mice.

A novel algorithm to assess the quality of 12-lead ECG recordings: validation in a real telecardiology application

Jermana L. de Moraes, Gabriela M. M. Paixao, Paulo R. Gomes, Eduardo M. A. M. Mendes, Antonio Luiz P. Ribeiro, Alessandro Beda

Summary: Automatic detection of ECG quality is important to minimize costs and risks related to delayed diagnosis. A new algorithm called Noise Automatic Classification Algorithm (NACA) was introduced to assess 12-lead ECG quality, which showed better performance compared to previous algorithms.

Generation of a thermostable, oral Zika vaccine that protects against virus challenge in non-human primates

Andrew Bacon, Mauro Teixeira, Vivian Costa, Peter Bone, Jennifer Simmons, Jeffrey Drew

Summary: Here we developed a thermally stable, orally administered Zika vaccine using engineered AdHu5. This vaccine, formulated with a mix of sugars and modified amino acids and protected by an enteric coated capsule, induced immune responses and reduced viral counts in mice and non-human primates. It has advantages over current vaccines that require cold storage and parenteral administration.

Non-Invasive Neuromodulation Methods to Alleviate Symptoms of Huntington's Disease: A Systematic Review of the Literature

Lijin Jose, Lais Bhering Martins, Thiago M. Cordeiro, Keya Lee, Alexandre Paim Diaz, Hyochol Ahn, Antonio L. Teixeira

Summary: This systematic review aims to investigate the effectiveness of noninvasive neuromodulation in HD-associated motor, cognitive, and behavioral symptoms. 19 studies were identified, exploring the use of ECT, TMS, and tDCS in the treatment of HD. The results showed improvement in HD symptoms, particularly depression and psychosis after ECT protocols, although the impact on cognitive and motor symptoms is more controversial.

Machine Learning-Based Routine Laboratory Tests Predict One-Year Cognitive and Functional Decline in a Population Aged 75+ Years

Karina Braga Gomes, Ramon Goncalves Pereira, Alexandre Alberto Braga, Henrique Cerqueira Guimaraes, Elisa de Paula Franca Resende, Antonio Lucio Teixeira, Maira Tonidandel Barbosa, Wagner Meira Junior, Maria das Gracas Carvalho, Paulo Caramelli

Summary: This study used machine learning algorithms to assess the ability of routine laboratory variables in predicting cognitive and functional decline in older adults. The random forest model was found to be the most accurate in predicting cognitive decline, including variables such as triglycerides, glucose, and hemoglobin. For functional decline, platelet count, hemoglobin, and cortisol were identified as important features. The findings suggest that routine laboratory variables can be used to predict cognitive and functional decline in older populations using machine learning algorithms.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the blood BDNF levels in patients with SLE. The meta-analysis of 8 studies showed no significant differences in blood BDNF concentrations between SLE patients and healthy controls. Further high-quality studies are needed to explore the potential role and relevance of BDNF in SLE.

Summary: This study aims to evaluate the effects of a high-refined carbohydrate (HC) diet on small intestine changes. Male BALB/c mice were fed an HC diet for 8 weeks, and it was found that although there were no significant differences in body weight gain, mice fed the HC diet exhibited adiposity and metabolic alterations. However, there were no significant changes observed in intestinal integrity, tight junction protein expression, intestinal permeability, and bacterial translocation.
