Phase angle, muscle tissue, and resistance training

Luis B. Sardinha, Gil B. Rosa

Summary: The biophysical response of the human body to electric current, particularly the phase angle (PhA), is considered as an indicator of cell health and mass. Despite the effectiveness of resistance training (RT) in improving PhA, the underlying biological mechanisms are still not fully understood. This review provides a theoretical explanation for the responsiveness of PhA determinants to RT and summarizes the evidence on the effects of RT on PhA in different age groups. The findings suggest that RT modulates cell volume and leads to changes in electrical resistance and capacitance, ultimately affecting PhA.

Athletes with different habitual fluid intakes differ in hydration status but not in body water compartments

Ruben Francisco, Filipe Jesus, Catarina L. Nunes, Iolanda Cioffi, Marta Alvim, Goncalo V. Mendonca, Henry Lukaski, Luis B. Sardinha, Analiza M. Silva

Summary: This study examined the physiological differences between elite athletes with habitual low and high water intake. The results showed that athletes with low water intake were classified as dehydrated based on urine-specific gravity, while their body water compartments were not different from athletes with high water intake. Therefore, interventions should be taken to encourage athletes to have sufficient water intake to maintain optimal hydration.

Dilated Cardiomyopathy: A Comprehensive Approach to Diagnosis and Risk Stratification

Andre Ferreira, Vera Ferreira, Miguel Marques Antunes, Ana Lousinha, Tiago Pereira-da-Silva, Diana Antunes, Pedro Silva Cunha, Mario Oliveira, Rui Cruz Ferreira, Silvia Aguiar Rosa

Summary: Dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) is a common cause of heart failure characterized by ventricular dilation and systolic dysfunction. Despite advances in therapy, DCM mortality rates remain high, making it a major indication for heart transplantation. Recent discoveries have highlighted the presence of minor structural cardiac abnormalities and different arrhythmogenic phenotypes in DCM patients before heart failure symptoms. This has raised diagnostic and management challenges, which can be addressed with the help of cardiac magnetic resonance and genetic testing.
