Summary: A flexible hyaluronic acid hydrogel adhesive with rapid gelation and strong tissue adhesion properties was fabricated via photopolymerization. The introduction of acrylate groups and high substitution of catechol groups enhanced its adhesive and procoagulant properties. The hydrogel exhibited superior hemostatic performance and biocompatibility compared to commercial products.

Summary: Granular polymer hydrogels based on dynamic covalent bonds have gained significant interest for designing injectable biomaterials. These materials exhibit shear-thinning behavior and have the ability to self-heal/recover after extrusion, which can be controlled through interactions between gel microparticles. This study focuses on producing bulk macro-hydrogels using thiolated-hyaluronic acid and disulphide bond formation with oxygen as an oxidant under physiological conditions. The resulting granular hyaluronic hydrogels show potential as stable injectable biomaterials with the ability to form filaments when extruded through a syringe.

Summary: In this study, a single-step method was reported to synthesize NorHA, and porous NorHA hydrogels were prepared via orthogonal thiol-norbornene reaction. The results showed that the properties of NorHA hydrogels could be adjusted by varying the content of crosslinker or NorHA. Cytocompatibility evaluation confirmed that the obtained NorHA was suitable for cell encapsulation. Moreover, this method could be extended to prepare cytocompatible photo-crosslinked hydrogels using other biopolymers.

Summary: This paper investigates the assembly process of colloidal hyaluronic acid (HyA) based hydrogel particles, with a focus on the formation of surfactant-neutralized polysaccharide networks. By measuring various indicators, such as rheology, light scattering, zeta potential, turbidity, and charge titration, it is found that the preparation of HyA-CTAB particles can be well controlled. The results show that a higher amount of negative charges can be detected on the polymer chain at smaller initial amounts of HyA, and the pH has negligible effect on the formation process.

Summary: Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a natural polysaccharide with excellent biocompatibility and moisturizing effect, which can affect angiogenesis, inflammation, and cell behavior. HA-based hydrogels formed by physical or chemical crosslinking strategies have both the physiological function of HA and the skeleton function of hydrogel. However, natural HA-based hydrogels have limitations such as insufficient mechanical strength and susceptibility to degradation. Researchers have developed various HA-based multifunctional hydrogels with notable properties by modifying the structure, using novel crosslinking strategies, and introducing reactive molecules. These hydrogels have extended the application scope in anticancer drug delivery, cartilage repair, three-dimensional cell culture, skin dressing, and other fields.

Summary: Organoids are a promising technology for various applications including disease modeling, drug development, tissue engineering, and regenerative medicine. However, their real-life applications are currently limited by challenges such as the scarcity of suitable biomimetic matrices. In this study, the researchers developed bio-instructive hydrogels with tunable stiffness to culture and induce the growth of cerebral organoids. They used multi-omics tools to study the effects of neuro-inductive cues on the biomolecular profiles of brain organoids.

Summary: This study developed a hybrid hydrogel (GOHA) based on gelatin and oxidized hyaluronic acid with excellent mechanical strength and tissue adhesion. The GOHA hydrogel exhibited fast gelation time, robust compression strength, and strong adhesion to porcine skin. By loading levofloxacin, it also showed obvious antibacterial activity without compromising hemocompatibility and cytocompatibility. Overall, this kind of hybrid hydrogel shows great potential as a tissue adhesive in biomedical fields.

Summary: Crosslinking affects the mechanical behavior and tissue metabolism of collagen-based tissues. Aging and diabetes alter the crosslinking type and density, thus changing tissue properties. High-connectivity enzymatic crosslinking and advanced-glycation end-products result in uniform deformation under daily activity, while low-connectivity enzymatic crosslinking does not. High-connectivity model displays more sliding, while AGEs induce instability in structures near the binding sites.

Summary: The potential of multi-layer nanoemulsions for improving the cellular uptake, antioxidant activity, and in vitro bioaccessibility of alpha-tocopherol was examined. The results showed that the multi-layer nanoemulsions significantly enhanced the cellular uptake and antioxidant activity of alpha-tocopherol compared to free coumarin 6. Furthermore, the use of chitosan and dextran sulfate as wall materials in the multi-layer nanoemulsions led to even higher cellular uptake, in vitro bioaccessibility, and antioxidant activity of alpha-tocopherol.
