Summary: Reduced magnesium intake is a common cause of deficiency with age, which can lead to increased oxidative stress and low-grade inflammation. There is a strong link between magnesium deficiency and age-related diseases, predisposition to infections, and chronic Epstein-Barr virus infection. Magnesium plays a crucial role in the immune response, vitamin D biosynthesis, and transport, indicating a possible role in the pathogenesis of infectious diseases such as COVID-19.

Summary: The social determinants associated with Serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D concentrations deficiency in older adults include gender, native origin, urban residence, sunlight exposure, and geographical latitude. Health promotion and prevention programs should be targeted towards older adults in urban areas, with a special focus on women, especially in the southernmost regions.

Summary: The aim of this study was to examine the associations between self-efficacy, resilience, and healthy ageing among older people who have had an acute hospital admission. The results showed that self-efficacy and resilience were positively associated with healthy ageing, while co-morbidities were negatively associated with healthy ageing. These findings suggest that promoting self-efficacy and resilience can contribute to healthy ageing in older individuals.

Summary: Intravenous vitamin C administration may reduce ICU and hospital length of stay for critically ill patients, but has no significant effect on mortality or organ failure. The results of trial sequential analysis were inconclusive, indicating a need for more high-quality RCTs to confirm the value of vitamin C for critically ill patients.

Summary: This study examined the relationship between vitamin C status and demographic factors in New South Wales. The results showed that vitamin C deficiency was more prevalent among older people and those living in areas of socio-economic disadvantage. It suggests that population assessment of vitamin C levels would be appropriate.

Summary: This meta-analysis investigated the effects of intravenous vitamin C on mortality rate in critically ill patients. The analysis showed that patients who received vitamin C treatment had a lower risk of mortality compared to those who did not. However, further research is needed to confirm these findings. Subgroup analysis indicated that low dosage of vitamin C was associated with reduced mortality risk, while high dosage did not show significant benefits. The use of vasopressors and mechanical ventilation was shorter in the vitamin C group.

Summary: This study applied multiple strategies to adjust vitamin A biomarkers during acute infection, with the IL-6 RM being the most effective strategy. Adjusted vitamin A insufficiency was associated with inflammatory immune responses. Further validation in larger studies is needed to confirm the findings.

Summary: This study found that vitamin C levels are significantly lower in AML patients at the time of initial diagnosis, further decreasing during disease progression, and returning to normal upon achievement of complete remission. Additionally, vitamin C levels are significantly lower in AML cells compared to healthy cells. However, there is no association between vitamin C levels and the mutation profile, cytogenetics, or risk stratification of AML patients.

Summary: Disorders of calcium-magnesium-phosphate metabolism are common in hospitalized patients over 65 years of age, with older individuals being at higher risk of abnormal magnesium concentrations. Sex influences the occurrence of abnormal magnesium, vitamin D, and calcium concentrations, with hypercalcemia and hypervitaminosis D disorders being significantly more common in women.

Summary: Older people have the highest rates of suicide, but the evidence on effective suicide prevention in late-life is limited. This systematic review of reviews aims to synthesize data from existing reviews on the prevention and/or reduction of suicide behavior in late-life and evidence for effectiveness of interventions. The results suggest inconclusive evidence regarding the use of antidepressants for the prevention of suicidal behavior in older people, while physical activity and collaborative management show potential for reducing suicide ideation.

Summary: The study found that 65% of older individuals with serious mental illness had decision-making capacity for end-of-life decisions, were able to express their values and engage in advance care discussions. Healthcare providers have a duty to initiate advance care discussions, optimize decision-making capacity, and protect autonomous decision-making.

Summary: TET2 silencing in T-ALL is associated with hypermethylation, and treatment with 5-azacytidine can reduce toxicity in TET2-silenced T-ALL cells, leading to stable re-expression of the TET2 gene.
