Obesity has been linked with poorer vitamin D status. The aim of this work was to a analyze the changes in vitamin D status and body weight of 61 young, overweight/obese women following two different weight control programs. The study subjects were randomly assigned to one of two slightly hypocaloric diets: diet V, in which the consumption of greens and vegetables was increased, of diet C, in which the consumption of cereals (some of which were enriched with vitamin D) was increased.. Dietary, anthropometric, and biochemical data were collected at the start of the study and at 2 weeks. At the beginning of the study, when taking into account only those women with a vitamin D intake below that recommended, obese women had a significantly lower mean serum 25(OH)D concentration than those who were lighter. Dietary intervention led to a greater reduction in energy intake among group C subjects; their weight was also that which was most reduced. In addition, the vitamin D intake and serum 25(OH)D values were increased only in group C women. Excess body weight was associated with deterioration in vitamin D status, especially when the intake of this vitamin was lower than that recommended. Subjects with higher serum vitamin D at the beginning of the study lost more weight than those subjects with lower initial values. Diet C was associated with a greater weight loss than diet V, and led to a greater increase in vitamin D intake and serum 25(OH)D levels. This might be of interest in the improvement of health in people trying to lose weight.

Evaluation of the potential of total proanthocyanidin content in feces as an intake biomarker

Cristina Magdaleno-Tapia, Paola Quifer-Rada, Elena Rodriguez-Rodriguez, Rocio Estevez-Santiago, Andrew L. Waterhouse, Rosa M. Lamuela-Reventos, Begona Olmedilla-Alonso, Jara Perez-Jimenez

Summary: This study explored the use of spectrophotometric measurement of fecal proanthocyanidin (PA) content as a biomarker of PA intake. The results showed that this method proved to be a valid compliance marker in a preclinical study, but was not associated with PA intake in free-living subjects. Further validation of this method in observational studies is needed.

Changes in Lutein Status Markers (Serum and Faecal Concentrations, Macular Pigment) in Response to a Lutein-Rich Fruit or Vegetable (Three Pieces/Day) Dietary Intervention in Normolipemic Subjects

Begona Olmedilla-Alonso, Elena Rodriguez-Rodriguez, Beatriz Beltran-de-Miguel, Milagros Sanchez-Prieto, Rocio Estevez-Santiago

Summary: Lutein, mainly obtained from dietary fruits and vegetables, was found to have a significant impact on lutein status markers through dietary intervention, with a notable increase in serum lutein concentration. Different food groups influenced lutein+zeaxanthin concentration and serum alpha- and beta-carotene levels, while MPOD and CT did not show significant variations.

Leukocytes and Neutrophil-Lymphocyte Ratio as Indicators of Insulin Resistance in Overweight/Obese School-Children

Elena Rodriguez-Rodriguez, M. Dolores Salas-Gonzalez, Rosa M. Ortega, Ana M. Lopez-Sobaler

Summary: The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between markers of inflammation and insulin resistance (IR) in overweight/obese children. The results showed that elevated white blood cell values and NLR may serve as indicators of the presence of IR in these subjects.

Socioeconomic and gender inequalities in childhood obesity in Spain

Enrique Gutierrez-Gonzalez, Francisco Sanchez Arenas, Ana Maria Lopez-Sobaler, Blanca Andreu Ivorra, Almudena Rollan Gordo, Marta Garcia-Solano

Summary: Childhood obesity in Spain is more prevalent in low-income households, where unhealthy eating habits and sedentary lifestyles are common. In contrast, high-income households have lower rates of childhood obesity and less frequent breastfeeding and physical activity. Schools attended by children from low-income households often lack facilities such as kitchens, gyms, and sports activities.

Role of breakfast and its quality in the health of children and adolescents in Spain

Luis A. Moreno Aznar, Maria del Carmen Vidal Carou, Ana Maria Lopez Sobaler, Gregorio Varela Moreiras, Jose Manuel Moreno Villares

Summary: Eating breakfast is a healthy habit that should be encouraged from childhood, as it can improve nutrient intake and overall dietary quality for children. However, while many children in Spain eat breakfast daily, there is still room for improvement in the quality of breakfast, especially among adolescents.
