Summary: The glass transition temperature of metallic glasses can be depressed by up to 40 K by reducing the sample size to below 10 & mu;m, allowing the attainment of glasses with low energy states. The properties of bulk metallic glasses are profoundly affected by reducing the sample size. By systematically reducing the length scale of gold and platinum-based metallic glasses, the vitrification behavior and atomic mobility were studied, revealing size-dependent vitrification kinetics in micrometer-sized glasses.

Summary: Shear transformation zones (STZs) are crucial for explaining plastic flow in metallic glasses, but their morphological and dynamical characteristics are not fully understood. Through simulations, it has been found that STZ activation occurs from the early stage of elastic deformation to the final shearing stage. STZs in the elastic and plastic ranges share similar characteristics but differ in magnitude and dynamics.

Summary: By establishing quantitative correlations among compositions, elastic constants, GFA, and mechanical properties of metallic glasses (MGs), it is possible to predict their performance in advance. Experimental data confirms the validity of this predictive approach. A strategy for designing MGs with optimal combinations of strength, toughness, and GFA is proposed to allow for high-throughput discovery of glass formers with excellent mechanical properties.

Summary: The mechanical properties and elastic recovery of CuAgAu metallic glasses were evaluated through molecular dynamics simulations during the nanoimprinting process. The influences of various factors such as cooling rate, stamp velocity, temperature, and percentage of Cu-Ag-Au elements were considered. The study demonstrated that changing the imprint conditions significantly affected important mechanical factors, including imprint force, shear strain, shear transformation zones, fraction of atoms with high shear strain, and elastic recovery ratio, which were deeply discussed.

The results show that defect-induced disordering is independent of glass thermal prehistory above the glass transition temperature, while significant differences exist between initial and relaxed samples below the transition temperature.

Summary: Metallic glasses, especially Hafnium based MGs, have superior properties to conventional crystalline metals/alloys, with HBMGs having the additional advantage of high density. However, their glass-forming ability is limited. Our discovery of two HBMGs with a critical casting diameter significantly higher than the current record allows for the production of bigger products and easier manufacturing/processing.

Summary: Dynamic mechanical analysis was performed on two metallic glasses with distinct beta relaxation features. The presence of free-volume zones and inelastic deformation behavior led to significant mechanical hysteresis loops in dynamic cyclic loadings, which can be described using a viscoelastic model. Annealing below the glass transition temperature reduced the concentration of free-volume zones, providing insights into improving the mechanical properties of high entropy metallic glasses.

Summary: The addition of a small amount of niobium has a significant effect on the glass transition kinetics and fragility of Zr55Cu30Al10Ni5 metallic glasses. It narrows the width of glass transition, accelerates the relaxation process, and decreases the energy barrier of glass transition, resulting in a lower fragility and stronger glass performance.

Summary: The mechanical properties of cellular metallic glasses are influenced by the shape of their cellular structures. Random structures with uniform porosity show higher yield strength and Young's modulus compared to microlattice structures. The chiral structure displays the highest Young's modulus, while stochastic cellular structures exhibit higher energy absorption capacity.

Summary: Kinetic and structural changes induced by Bi alloying in dilute Ni-Bi alloys were investigated, focusing on grain boundary phase transitions. The grain boundary diffusion of Ni in the Ni-Bi alloys was measured across single and two-phase regions of the bulk phase diagram. The results showed that the Ni grain boundary diffusion rates were dependent on the Bi concentration and were influenced by Bi segregation and multi-layer Bi segregation along the grain boundaries. The presence of a liquid layer of Bi at the grain boundaries resulted in the highest Ni diffusivity. Additionally, structural transitions between different grain boundary phases were found to have a significant impact on the grain boundary diffusion rates.

Summary: The reduction of vibrational contributions to thermal transport and the search for materials with low lattice thermal conductivities are crucial in thermoelectric research. Spectral analytical models have been proven effective in understanding the physics of low thermal conduction, but another mechanism called diffusons has been discovered in complex crystalline materials. This work proposes an analytical 2-channel transport model that explains the thermal conductivities of the solid solution series Ag9-xGa1-xGexSe6 and provides materials design metrics for 2-channel thermal transport.

Summary: Laser shock peening (LSP) treatment significantly affects the phase structure and properties of titanium-based BMG materials, promoting rejuvenation and introducing heterogeneity. This leads to improved plasticity and resistance to crack propagation. LSP-1 specimen exhibits higher hardness and plasticity, reducing fatigue peeling wear caused by brittleness. However, excessive LSP results in increased susceptibility to pitting and significantly reduces tribocorrosion resistance.

Summary: The amount of globally recycled e-waste is less than 20% of the total produced. One of the causes for this low recycling rate is the complex and expensive selective sorting of metals. However, recent research has shown that high entropy alloys (HEAs) can be made from complex alloy mixtures, reducing the dependence on pure critical metals. It has been demonstrated that e-waste can be used to produce competitive HEAs.

Summary: In this study, a novel medium-entropy alloy (MEA) (Fe65Ni15Cr10Co10)92Ti5Al3 with a dual heterogeneous structure was developed by adding Ti and Al to a previously reported Fe65Ni15Co10Cr10 MEA. The MEA exhibited ultra-high ultimate tensile strength and work hardening extent at room temperature. The addition of Ti and Al induced precipitation and resulted in a continuous FCC -> BCC martensitic transformation and a transformation-induced plasticity effect. The excellent mechanical properties of the alloy were attributed to the synergistic effects of hetero-deformation induced strengthening, precipitation strengthening, and TRIP.

Summary: This study focuses on the influence of the thermomechanical protocol on the aging or rejuvenation of glass by decoupling the thermal and mechanical processes. The results show that Labased metallic glass exhibits material hypomnesia, with a clearer rejuvenation trend observed after imposing increasing amplitude strain oscillations. There is a threshold value of the oscillation amplitude that separates the effects of the protocol into acceleration of aging or rejuvenation. This study reveals the correlation between the thermomechanical properties of metallic glass and the previous application of strain oscillations of various amplitudes, providing an effective tool for regulating the structural state of metallic glasses through a simple-operated method.

Summary: We report the formation of large and highly twinned dendrites of the Al13Fe4 approximant phase embedded in an fcc Al-rich matrix. Using a rapid cooling technique, the approximant appears as a 10-fold dendrite. The grain distributions within the arm are complex and a single dendrite arm can contain up to four different orientations. Three types of twins, namely {100}, {001} and {201} twins, have been identified. A growth mechanism involving heteroepitaxial growth from a decagonal Al-Fe quasicrystalline seed is proposed to explain the formation of these specific 10-fold motifs.
