Summary: Virtual reality (VR) is widely used for studying human behavior and brain functions, but it is unclear whether it represents actual reality or is just an advanced simulation. This study found that real-life and VR height exposures were mostly indistinguishable on a psychophysiological level, indicating that contemporary VR setups are capable of mimicking reality. This opens up possibilities for studying real-world cognitive and emotional processes in controlled laboratory conditions.

Summary: This paper investigates the impact of incongruencies in different information processing layers on the perceived plausibility and spatial presence of Mixed Reality (MR) experiences. The study found that cognitive incongruence induced by the absence of traceable power outages significantly decreased the perceived plausibility and spatial presence ratings in Augmented Reality (AR), compared to Virtual Reality (VR).

Summary: This paper investigates the impact of incongruencies on different information processing layers in Virtual and Augmented Reality experiences. The study found that incongruencies in sensation/perception significantly affected perceived plausibility and spatial presence ratings. However, in cases of incongruent cognition, these effects were enhanced.

Summary: Autistic transition age youth face challenges in obtaining employment, with interviewing being a critical barrier. The Virtual Interview Training for Transition Age Youth proved to be effective in improving job interview skills and reducing interview anxiety among participants. Future research should explore how culturally diverse backgrounds and different challenges may affect the response to this intervention.

Summary: This review systematically identified evidence on the use of virtual reality interventions for adolescents in hospital settings. Virtual reality was found to be a safe and effective way to reduce pain and anxiety in adolescents in hospitals, especially when the software is highly immersive and specifically designed for therapeutic purposes. Larger and more diverse studies are needed to further explore the potential of virtual reality in hospital settings.

Summary: The pilot study examined the preliminary effectiveness and feasibility of a virtual reality job interview tool (VR-JIT) in improving job interview performance of adolescents on the autism spectrum. Results indicated improved job interview performance in the experimental group, although anxiety and self-efficacy perceptions did not change significantly. Students found the intervention easy to use and enjoyable.

Summary: This study aimed to find the neural correlates of VR therapy for social anxiety disorder (SAD) by evaluating treatment effectiveness using portable functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS). Patients with SAD received 6 sessions of VR treatment, and their brain activities were measured with fNIRS while watching videos of their self-introductions in VR. The study findings suggest that activities of the frontopolar prefrontal cortex (FPPFC) and orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) were associated with symptom reduction after VR treatment for SAD, providing insight into the mechanisms underlying VR therapy for this disorder.

Summary: Both augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) have been increasingly used in medicine, and this study aimed to investigate the effect of AR on patients' preoperative anxiety. The randomized clinical trial found that the use of AR decreased preoperative anxiety compared to traditional perioperative education, but had no significant effect on postoperative anxiety, pain levels, or narcotic use.

Summary: Digital technology use plays a crucial role in the psychological well-being of adolescents, and problematic internet use can lead to behavioral addiction in this age group. High levels of problematic internet use intensify the relationship between maladaptive personality traits and psychological symptoms, while also buffering the relationship between difficulties in identity formation and aggression regulation with psychological problems.

Summary: The Bayesian-brain framework suggests that the effects on the body are the result of the interaction between priors and likelihood. While the role of priors has been extensively studied, the relevance of likelihood has been overlooked. Attention is proposed as a way to manipulate the relevance of likelihood by focusing on specific components of somatosensorial information. Mindful attention and selective attention are particularly relevant in this framework, and attention has the potential to be a major player in placebo/nocebo research. Attentional strategies could actively involve individuals in shaping their care process and health.

Summary: This study developed a new instrument called EXIT 360 degrees, which utilizes 360 degrees technologies to provide an ecologically valid assessment of executive functioning, and compared it with traditional neuropsychological tests to evaluate its convergent validity. Through the evaluation of 77 healthy subjects, the results showed a significant correlation between the EXIT 360 degrees total score and all neuropsychological tests, as well as a correlation between the EXIT 360 degrees total reaction time and timed neuropsychological tests. The usability assessment also showed good results. In conclusion, this study serves as an initial validation step towards considering the EXIT 360 degrees as a standardized instrument for ecologically valid assessment of executive functioning, but further research is needed to evaluate its effectiveness in discriminating between healthy control subjects and patients with executive dysfunctions.

Summary: Growing evidence has shown that motor simulation and spatial perspective-taking play crucial roles in action language. However, there is still a lack of understanding of the interaction between motor and spatial processes in the presence of multiple actors, as well as the consistency of embodied processes across cultures. To address this gap, the researchers conducted a study using an online sentence-picture verification task with Italian and US English speakers. The results showed that motor simulation and perspective-taking are independent processes that interact during sentence comprehension, and there is evidence of cross-cultural consistency in embodied processing of action language.

Summary: Space can be used metaphorically to describe semantic and perceptual similarity, and research has shown that similarity and spatial information can influence each other. Similarity is associated with spatial closeness, while proximity leads to similarity judgments. It is unknown if phonological similarity/dissimilarity is represented as spatial closeness/distance in declarative memory.

Summary: Older adults are more susceptible to the adverse effects of SARS-CoV-2 infection, but few studies have analyzed neuropsychological changes in healthy older people during the pandemic compared to before. This study found that memory and attention remained stable, while global cognitive, executive, and language functions improved. There were no longitudinal changes in depression, hypomania, and disinhibition, but apathy and anxiety increased significantly.

Summary: The widespread use of tablets and smartphones has opened up new opportunities for educational strategies, including Mobile-Assisted Language Learning (MALL). This study examined the feasibility and effectiveness of a self-administered MALL homework training using immersive 360 degrees videos, compared to a training using standard videos. Results showed that students with a positive attitude towards technology watched more videos and those who underwent the training with 360 degrees videos learned more words.
