Increasing Time-to-Treatment for Lung Cancer: Are We Going Backward?

This study evaluated the clinicopathological features and survival of EOCRC in the Arab population and found no differences compared to late-onset colorectal cancer (LOCRC). This adds to our understanding of the disease, suggesting a unique entity of EOCRC in Arabs or the absence of a screening program for those above 50 years old.

Liver transplantation in metastatic colorectal cancer: are we ready for it?

Undernutrition Scored Using the CONUT Score with Hypoglycemic Status in ICU-Admitted Elderly Patients with Sepsis Shows Increased ICU Mortality

Summary: This study aimed to investigate whether undernutrition status and the degree of glycemic disorders had an impact on the prognosis of sepsis patients. A total of 307 adult patients with sepsis were included in the retrospective analysis. The study found that most sepsis patients had an undernutrition status according to their CONUT scores. High CONUT scores were associated with higher mortality rates, and the CONUT scores in the hypoglycemic group were significantly higher than those in other groups with undernutrition status. The undernutrition statuses of sepsis patients, as evaluated by the CONUT scores, were independent predictors of prognosis factors.

Ceftazidime-Avibactam (C/A) Resistant, Meropenem Sensitive KPC-Producing Klebsiella pneumoniae in ICU Setting: We Are What We Are Treated with?

Summary: The continuous spread of carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae (CP-Kp) strains poses a significant challenge to healthcare systems. Ceftazidime/avibactam (C/A) has been a first-line treatment, but C/A-resistant strains are increasing, especially among pneumonia patients or those with prior suboptimal blood exposure to C/A. A retrospective study was conducted on patients admitted to an ICU for COVID-19, with the primary purpose of studying C/A-resistant strains and describing the characteristics of the population. The study found a single clone of C/A-resistant KPC-Kp isolates with a D179Y mutation in the bla(KPC-2) gene.

Intimate Partner Violence Among Surgeons: We are Not Immune

Summary: This study analyzed the characteristics and impact of bacteremia in immunocompromised patients with acute respiratory failure. The incidence of bacteremia was 17%, with gram negative rods and gram positive cocci being common pathogens. Although bacteremia was associated with increased ICU mortality, no significant difference in hospital or 90-day mortality was found after adjusting for baseline characteristics.

Summary: This study compares categorical and continuous combinations of standardized mortality ratio (SMR) and standardized resource use (SRU) for evaluating ICU performance. The results show that the correlation between these metrics is higher in ICUs in Brazil and Uruguay compared to those in the Netherlands. The continuous combination demonstrates appropriate statistical properties for performance evaluation.

Impact of Subsyndromal Delirium Occurrence and Its Trajectory during ICU Stay

Summary: Despite recent advances in the field, the association between subsyndromal delirium (SSD) in the ICU and poor outcomes is not entirely clear. Our findings support the association of SSD with increased ICU length of stay (LOS), but not with ICU mortality. Monitoring the trajectory of SSD early at ICU admission can help to identify patients with increased risk of conversion from SSD to delirium or coma.

Summary: This study evaluated the SAPS-3 and SOFA scores for predicting in-hospital mortality in SAH patients. The addition of nSAPS-3 and nSOFA scores significantly improved the prediction of hospital mortality, independently associating with in-hospital mortality after SAH. these scores should be integrated into early assessment of SAH patients.
