A compact high-current pulse generator with the amplitude of the load current up to 140 kA and rise time below 200 ns is designed. The basic element of the pulse generator design is the HCEIcap 100-0.2 capacitor switch assembly. The capacitance value of the capacitor switch assembly is 200 nF, the charging voltage is 100 kV, the energy storage is 1000 J, and the full inductance value is 20 nH. The sizes of the active part of the capacitor are 80-mm inner diameter x160-mm outer diameter x160 mm. A multigap spark-gap is used as a switch. The rise rate of the current through the load (X-pinch, 2 molybdenum wires with a 25-mu m diameter) is 1.3 kA/ns, and the soft X-ray pulse duration is 2.0-3.5 ns.

Summary: A radiographic diagnostic has been developed to quantify the plume of erosion products after the interaction between a target and a relativistic electron beam. The diagnostic is based on a point Z-pinch (PZ-pinch) with a metallic plasma jet. It creates an X-ray source with high spatial resolution and was tested successfully using a linear induction accelerator. The diagnostic allows for the observation and measurement of the expansion of the plume.

Summary: This study presents a bespoke and cost-effective trigger generator that utilizes impact-ionization wave triggering to significantly increase the current and rise time of a thyristor. The experiments demonstrate that the generator can achieve an order of magnitude increase in both current and dI/dt. This work paves the way for the development of powerful yet compact solid-state trigger generators and larger pulsers for various pulsed power applications.

Thermal instabilities in micropinches under turbulent heating conditions

V. Oreshkin, A. P. Artyomov, E. Oreshkin

Summary: In this study, anomalous thermal instabilities occurring in micropinches are analyzed using the theory of small perturbations. The dispersion relation and growth rates for the instabilities are obtained, and a comparison is made between anomalous thermal instabilities and sausage-type magnetohydrodynamic instabilities. The results show that there is a threshold current for each pinch material, below which anomalous thermal instabilities prevail over magnetohydrodynamic instabilities.
