Three complexes of the form [Ln(3)(III)(OQ)(9)] (Ln = Gd, Tb, Dy; OQ = 8-quinolinolate) have been synthesized and their magnetic properties studied. The trinuclear complexes adopt V-shaped geometries with three bridging 8-quinolinolate oxygen atoms between the central and peripheral eight-coordinate metal atoms. The magnetic properties of these three complexes differ greatly. Variable-temperature direct-current (dc) magnetic susceptibility measurements reveal that the gadolinium and terbium complexes display weak antiferromagnetic nearest-neighbor magnetic exchange interactions. This was quantified in the isotropic gadolinium case with an exchangecoupling parameter of J = -0.068(2) cm(-1). The dysprosium compound displays weak ferromagnetic exchange. Variable-frequency and -temperature alternating-current magnetic susceptibility measurements on the anisotropic cases reveal that the dysprosium complex displays single-molecule-magnet behavior, in zero dc field, with two distinct relaxation modes of differing time scales within the same molecule. Analysis of the data revealed anisotropy barriers of U-eff = 92 and 48 K for the two processes. The terbium complex, on the other hand, displays no such behavior in zero dc field, but upon application of a static dc field, slow magnetic relaxation can be observed. Ab initio and electrostatic calculations were used in an attempt to explain the origin of the experimentally observed slow relaxation of the magnetization for the dysprosium complex.

Summary: Our study provides a comprehensive assessment of anti-H. pylori antibody profiles in gastric intestinal metaplasia (IM). The identified novel antibodies against target antigens, in addition to CagA, may play a role in the progression of IM. Specific H. pylori antibodies, along with other biomarkers, can help identify IM patients for surveillance.

Formation of a cyclooctatetraenylsamarium(iii) inverse sandwich that ring-opens tetrahydrofuran

Ramees Peedika Paramban, Zhifang Guo, Glen B. Deacon, Peter C. Junk

Summary: Treatment of [Sm(DippForm)(2)(thf)(2)] with 1,3,5,7-cyclooctatetraene in toluene under reductive conditions leads to the formation of an inverse sandwich dinuclear complex [Sm-2(DippForm)(4)(COT)] (1). However, in THF, it generates [Sm(DippForm)(COT)(thf)(2)] (2) and [Sm(DippForm)(2)(O-C4H8-DippForm)(thf)] (3). Furthermore, 1 gives 2 and 3 upon treatment with THF.

Bromobenzene Transforms Lanthanoid Pseudo-Grignard Chemistry

Md Abdul Halim, Zhifang Guo, Glen B. Deacon, Peter C. Junk

Summary: This study demonstrates the preparation of divalent lanthanoid pseudo-Grignard reagents PhLnBr (Ln= Sm, Eu and Yb) by the oxidative addition of bromobenzene (PhBr) to lanthanoid metals in tetrahydrofuran (THF). The reaction of PhLnBr with bulky N,N'-bis(2,6-di-isopropylphenyl)formamidine (DippFormH) generates Ln(II) complexes, and the reaction with 3,5-diphenylpyrazole (Ph2pzH) leads to the formation of both divalent and trivalent complexes. The use of PhLnBr in this work leads to different outcomes compared to previous reactions with PhLnI.

Pushing the Boundary of Covalency in Lanthanoid-Tellurium Bonds: Insights from the Synthesis, Molecular and Electronic Structures of Low-Coordinate, Monomeric Europium(II) and Ytterbium(II) Tellurolates

Rajesh Deka, Sourav Dey, Zhifang Guo, Ray J. Butcher, Peter C. Junk, David R. Turner, Harkesh B. Singh, Glen B. Deacon

Summary: Due to the differences between lanthanoids and tellurium atoms, low-coordinate, monomeric lanthanoid tellurolate complexes have been difficult to synthesize compared to complexes with lighter group 16 elements. In a recent study, low-coordinate, monomeric lanthanoid tellurolate complexes were successfully synthesized using hybrid organotellurolate ligands containing N-donor pendant arms. The structures of these complexes were determined using single-crystal X-ray diffraction, and their electronic structures were investigated using DFT calculations.

Direct Reaction - One Step Route to Synthesize Lanthanoid-iodide Formamidinates

Zhifang Guo, Md Abdul. Halim, Victoria L. Blair, Glen B. Deacon, Peter C. Junk

Summary: This paper describes a novel and simple method to synthesize lanthanoid(III) diiodide formamidinates through direct reaction of lanthanoid metals with equimolar amounts of iodine and a formamidine under ultrasonication. The products were identified by X-ray crystallography and all the trivalent complexes were found to be stable to rearrangement.

Divalent ansa-Octaphenyllanthanocenes: Synthesis, Structures, and EuII Luminescence

Angus C. G. Shephard, Aymeric Delon, Sylviane Chevreux, Agathe Martinez, Zhifang Guo, Glen B. Deacon, Gilles Lemercier, Nathan McClenaghan, Gediminas Jonusauskas, Peter C. Junk, Florian Jaroschik

Summary: New divalent ansa-octaphenyllanthanocenecomplexes were synthesized through reductive dimerization of 1,2,3,4-tetraphenylfulvene, and their structures and spectroscopic properties were compared to unbridged octaphenyl and decaphenyl sandwich complexes. The reductive dimerization of fulvenes using low-valent metal precursors is a direct method for accessing ethylene-bridged metallocenes. In this work, a new synthesis of the unsubstituted exocyclic 1,2,3,4-tetraphenylfulvene and its characterization, as well as the synthesis of divalent ansa-octaphenylmetallocenes with different lanthanoid metals, were described. The luminescence properties of one of the complexes were also studied.

Reactivity of [Sm(DippForm)2(thf)2] with Substrates Containing Azo Linkages

Ramees Peedika Paramban, Zhifang Guo, Glen B. Deacon, Peter C. Junk

Summary: This paper investigates the interaction between divalent [Sm(DippForm)(2)(thf)(2)] and substrates containing azo linkages. It is found that treatment with trans-azobenzene results in the formation of mononuclear or dinuclear complexes, as well as [Sm(DippForm)(3)]. Moreover, the reaction of [Sm(DippForm)(2)(thf)(2)] with 1H-1,2,3-benzotriazole yields a trivalent samarium complex containing benzotriazolate.

Oxidation of the Platinum(II) Anticancer Agent [Pt{(p-BrC6F4)NCH2CH2NEt2}Cl(py)] to Platinum(IV) Complexes by Hydrogen Peroxide

Ruchika Ojha, Peter C. Junk, Alan M. Bond, Glen B. Deacon

Summary: Pt-IV coordination complexes were synthesized by oxidizing the antitumor agent [Pt-II(p-BrC6F4)NCH2CH2NEt2}Cl(py)]. Experimental data showed that excess H2O2 and elevated temperature favored the oxidation of the ligand, while a smaller amount of H2O2 at room temperature favored the oxidation of the metal, resulting in the formation of platinum(IV) complexes.
