Partial oxidation of an aqueous solution of (CoCl2)-Cl-II center dot 6H(2)O with (NH4)(6)[(Mo7O24)-O-VI]center dot 4H(2)O in the presence of (NH4)(2)SO3 center dot H2O and LiCl, at pH approximate to 5.3, leads to isolation of the octanuclear cluster (NH4)(11)(Li subset of[(Co4Co4III)-Co-II(SO3)(16)(NH3)(8)]center dot 10H(2)O), 1. The structure of the anion of 1 consists of a central [CO4II], almost ideal square planar unit, and a pair of symmetry-related Co-III dimers above and below the Co-4(II) plane grafting onto the tetramer by 16 bridging sulfite groups. The [Co-8(SO3)(16)(NH3)(8)](12-) cluster encapsulates a lithium cation which lies at the center of the Co4(II) square.

Acid/base responsive assembly/dis-assembly of a family of zirconium(IV) clusters with a cyclic imide-dioxime ligand

Stamatis S. Passadis, Sofia Hadjithoma, Michael G. Papanikolaou, Anastasios D. Keramidas, Haralampos N. Miras, Themistoklis A. Kabanos

Summary: The hydrolytically stable dioxime ligand, H(3)pidiox, exhibits strong chelation with hard metals in high oxidation states, potentially useful in metal sequestering processes from aqueous solutions. Experimental data analysis indicates that zirconium compounds with different structural features can be synthesized under different pH conditions.

Four electron selective O2 reduction by a tetranuclear vanadium(IV/V/hydroquinonate catalyst: application in the operation of Zn-air batteries

Anastasios D. Keramidas, Sofia Hadjithoma, Chryssoula Drouza, Tatiana Santos Andrade, Panagiotis Lianos

Summary: This study explores the application of a vanadium (IV/V) hydroquinone as an oxygen reduction electrocatalyst, demonstrating potential in metal-air batteries. The reduction of oxygen involves a proton-coupled electron transfer mechanism, supported by NMR spectroscopy. The complex performs best in acidic electrolytes, showing significant increases in current and power when applied in the battery.

Controlled Hydrolysis of Phosphate Esters: A Route to Calixarene-Supported Rare-Earth Clusters

Marjan Hosseinzadeh, Sergio Sanz, Jan van Leusen, Natalya V. Izarova, Euan K. Brechin, Scott J. Dalgarno, Paul Koegerler

Summary: Phosphate ester bonds are stable in nature and can be isolated using a combination of phosphoryl and calix[4]arene moieties. In this study, hydrolyzed phosphoryl-calix[4]arene ligands were formed through Ln(III)-mediated P-OEt bond cleavage in L-PO. The resulting Ln(III) species were trapped as dimers, and the Dy derivative exhibited slow magnetization relaxation. This strategy can be further applied to create a broader range of hydrolyzed platforms that mimic nuclease enzymes.

A {CoIII2DyIII4} Single-Molecule Magnet with an Expanded Core Structure

Dumitru Stati, Jan van Leusen, Naushad Ahmed, Victor Ch Kravtsov, Paul Koegerler, Svetlana G. Baca

Summary: The coordination cluster compound [CoIII2DyIII4(OH)2- (ib)8(bdea)2(NO3)4(H2O)2]middot2MeCN (1) was synthesized by reacting cobalt(II) isobutyrate (ib) with Dy(NO3)3middot6H2O and N-butyldiethanolamine (H2bdea) in air. The {CoIII2DyIII4} core fragment consists of two {CoDy2(mu 3-OH)} triangles connected via mu-O and mu-carboxylate bridges, resulting in a flat zigzag metal scaffold.

Tris-decorated multi-iron polyoxotungstates

Natalya Izarova, Fabian Faassen, Paul Koegerler

Summary: This study discovered solution-stable tris(hydroxymethyl)aminomethane-functionalized Fe-III-containing polyoxotungstates, which exhibit an unusual anchoring mode of triol moieties, with one -NH2 and one -CH2OH group remaining accessible for post-functionalization or chemisorption. The redox-active compounds were isolated under unusually mild reaction conditions and characterized in the solid state and in aqueous solutions.

Ag(II) as Spin Super-Polarizer in Molecular Spin Clusters

Mateusz Domanski, Jan van Leusen, Marvin Metzelaars, Paul Koegerler, Wojciech Grochala

Summary: By using quantum mechanical calculations, this study examines the magnetic (super)-exchange interactions in molecular coordination clusters containing fluoride-bridged late transition metals, lanthanides, and Ag(II). The results show that the presence of Ag(II) can significantly modify the magnetic properties of these systems, including the sign and strength of the coupling. Ag(II) acts as a spin super-polarizer and this feature could be utilized in spintronics and various molecular devices.

Solar charging of a Zn-air battery

Maria Katsaiti, Evangelos Papadogiannis, Vassilios Dracopoulos, Anastasios Keramidas, Panagiotis Lianos

Summary: The solar-charging of Zn-air batteries has been investigated using a photoelectrocatalytic or a photovoltaic system. By substituting the oxygen evolution reaction, the efficiency of battery charging can be improved, and significant power gain can be achieved through photoelectrocatalytic charging. Charging is also possible using a photovoltaic cell as long as it provides enough voltage to overcome the potential and overpotentials of the battery.

Chemically detaching hBN crystals grown at atmospheric pressure and high temperature for high-performance graphene devices

Taoufiq Ouaj, Leonard Kramme, Marvin Metzelaars, Jiahan Li, Kenji Watanabe, Takashi Taniguchi, James H. Edgar, Bernd Beschoten, Paul Koegerler, Christoph Stampfer

Summary: This work demonstrates the growth of hBN crystals using an iron flux and their potential for high-performance hBN-graphene devices. The crystals can be detached from the metal using hydrochloric acid, and they exhibit excellent quality for van der Waals heterostructures. The thickness of exfoliated hBN flakes does not correlate with their quality in high mobility graphene devices.

Summary: We demonstrate a concept of molecular-level spintronics by studying spin centers antiferromagnetically (AFM) coupled to result in a singlet ground state. By performing time-dependent quantum transport measurements, we observe distinct current transitions corresponding to the AFM states of individual molecular complexes grafted on a carbon nanotube. Our statistical analysis shows independent switching events for cobalt complexes and coherent superposition of AFM spin states for manganese complexes.
