Worldwide, ageing societies are bringing challenges for independent living and healthcare. Health-enabling technologies for pervasive healthcare and sensor-enhanced health information systems offer new opportunities for care. In order to identify, implement and assess such new information and communication technologies (ICT) the 'Lower Saxony Research Network Design of Environments for Ageing' (GAL) has been launched in 2008 as interdisciplinary research project. In this publication, we inform about the goals and structure of GAL, including first outcomes, as well as to discuss the potentials and possible barriers of such highly interdisciplinary research projects in the field of health-enabling technologies for pervasive healthcare. Although GAL's high interdisciplinarity at the beginning slowed down the speed of research progress, we can now work on problems, which can hardly be solved by one or few disciplines alone. Interdisciplinary research projects on ICT in ageing societies are needed and recommended.

Web-Based Versus Print-Based Physical Activity Intervention for Community-Dwelling Older Adults: Crossover Randomized Trial

Claudia R. Pischke, Claudia Voelcker-Rehage, Tiara Ratz, Manuela Peters, Christoph Buck, Jochen Meyer, Kai von Holdt, Sonia Lippke

Summary: This study compared the acceptance and effectiveness of two interventions for promoting physical activity in older adults. The results showed that there was little movement between intervention groups when given the choice, and participation was not associated with increases in physical activity or decreases in sedentary behavior over time.

Summary: The International Medical Informatics Association (IMIA) has published recommendations for biomedical and health informatics (BMHI) education to support educators, identify essential skills, provide an evaluation tool, and encourage the establishment and development of BMHI educational programs. IMIA's taskforce updated the recommendations, which cover various domains, programs, and levels of education in BMHI. Accreditation and information exchange on BMHI programs and courses are also provided.

Federated electronic data capture (fEDC): Architecture and prototype

Matthias Ganzinger, Max Blumenstock, Axel Fuerstberger, Leonard Greulich, Hans A. Kestler, Michael Marschollek, Christian Niklas, Tim Schneider, Cord Spreckelsen, Erik Tute, Julian Varghese, Martin Dugas

Summary: Structured documentation of findings is important in clinical research and patient care. Integration of electronic case report forms (eCRF) with electronic health records (EHR) is challenging when researchers from different institutions collaborate. To address this issue, a novel architecture for a federated electronic data capture system (fEDC) was proposed.

Effectiveness of Computer-Tailored Health Communication in Increasing Physical Activity in People With or at Risk of Long-Term Conditions: Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Longdan Hao, Stefan Goetze, Tourkiah Alessa, Mark S. Hawley

Summary: This systematic review and meta-analysis examines the effectiveness of computer-tailored health communication (CTHC) in increasing physical activity for individuals with or at risk of long-term conditions. The results indicate that CTHC has a significant small to medium effect in promoting physical activity compared to general health information or no information. However, further studies are needed to guide design decisions for maximizing the effectiveness of CTHC.

How Human Drivers Can Benefit From Collective Perception: A User Study

Keno Garlichs, Maximilian Huber, Lars Wolf

Summary: This article presents a concept for a human-machine interface that can warn drivers about dangerous objects in vehicular networking. A user study in a driving simulator was conducted to evaluate its effectiveness, using eye-tracking glasses to analyze the driver's gaze and a questionnaire to gauge subjective experience. The results indicate that drivers trust the system, brake earlier and with more control due to the warnings, and ultimately, the majority of accidents could be avoided.

THE EFFECT OF SPOKEN LANGUAGE ON SPEECH ENHANCEMENT USING SELF-SUPERVISED SPEECH REPRESENTATION LOSS FUNCTIONS

George Close, Thomas Hain, Stefan Goetze

Summary: Recent work in speech enhancement has explored the use of self-supervised speech representations (SSSRs) in the loss functions. However, the relationship between the language used to train the self-supervised representation and the language used to train the enhancement system has received little attention. This study investigates the effect of training language and amount of training data on the performance of the enhancement models across different languages. The results show that the training language of the self-supervised representation has a minor effect on performance, while the amount of training data for a specific language greatly affects performance.

William Ravenscroft, Stefan Goetze, Thomas Hain

Summary: This paper proposes a weighted multi-dilation temporal convolutional network (WD-TCN) for speech dereverberation task, which consistently outperforms the traditional TCN model in various model configurations, and using WD-TCN is a more parameter-efficient method.

Receptive Field Analysis of Temporal Convolutional Networks for Monaural Speech Dereverberation

William Ravenscroft, Stefan Goetze, Thomas Hain

Summary: This paper analyzes the impact of model size and receptor field (RF) on the dereverberation performance of TCNs in speech processing. The experiments show that larger RF can significantly improve performance when training smaller TCN models. It is also found that TCNs benefit from a wider RF when dereverberating room impulse responses (RIRs) with larger RT60 values.
