Summary: This study aimed to estimate the proportion of cases of Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC) that could be prevented by modifiable lifestyle factors. Using several cohorts in the US and Europe, the researchers created modifiable risk scores and healthy lifestyle scores, and found that a significant number of CD and UC cases could be prevented through lifestyle modification.

Summary: The pathophysiological processes of inflammatory bowel diseases, such as Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, are not fully understood, but dysregulation of the gut immune system leading to overproduction of pro-inflammatory cytokines is a key factor. Both environmental and genetic factors are involved, with the microbiota playing a crucial role. PPARγ modulates interactions with environmental factors, and its impaired expression may represent a critical step in IBD pathogenesis, particularly in ulcerative colitis.

Summary: This study found that in patients with IBD, 61.9% of women reported SD and 43.5% of men reported ED, which are significantly higher than in healthy controls. The main factors associated with SD in women were anxiety and active perianal disease, while in men, age, depression, and active perianal disease were the main factors associated with ED.

Summary: This study investigates environmental risk factors for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) in the Saudi population. The results suggest that vaginal delivery, age above 10 years, deficient fruit intake, low physical activity, exposure to antibiotics, appendectomy, and frequent gastroenteritis admissions are associated with an increased risk of IBD.

Summary: This article examines the prevalence of inflammatory bowel disease in patients with gastritis, duodenitis, and peptic ulcer disease, taking into consideration the presence of Helicobacter pylori infection. It is found that inflammatory bowel disease is less common in patients with H. pylori, and there is no increased risk of developing IBD after undergoing H. pylori eradication therapy.

Summary: IBD is a chronic inflammatory disease that poses a growing health problem. The use of anti-depressants as a routine regimen for IBD patients is not officially approved, but some physicians prescribe them empirically to alleviate symptoms. However, the prescription of SSRIs may come with adverse effects such as sleep disturbances, and there is evidence suggesting that prolonged use of SSRIs can worsen the IBD course. Despite the need for further research, periodic prescriptions of SSRIs at monthly intervals may be recommended for IBD patients.

Summary: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a significant global health problem that involves chronic intestinal inflammation and severe comorbidities. Disease-associated alterations to the intestinal microbiota and microbial metabolites play a crucial role in IBD development. Understanding the microbial function in the context of IBD and characterizing disease-associated microbial metabolites are necessary for targeted treatment strategies.

Summary: This review examined recent evidence on the impact of depression and anxiety on disease activity, relapse, and healthcare utilization in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), highlighting the importance of assessing depression and anxiety in routine management of IBD patients. Developing more longitudinal research and randomized controlled trials will provide further insights into the role of mental health in IBD outcomes.

Summary: Geographical clusters of pediatric inflammatory bowel disease (PIBD) were identified in British Columbia, Canada. The study found associations between PIBD incidence and ethnicity and environmental factors. The study also identified novel risk factors, such as fine particulate matter pollution and agricultural petroleum oil.
