Sonali D. Advani, Esther Baker, Andrea Cromer, Brittain Wood, Kathryn L. Crawford, Linda Crane, Linda Adcock, Linda Roach, Polly Padgette, Deverick J. Anderson, Daniel J. Sexton

Summary: Differences in hospital preparedness for SARS-CoV-2 were observed in personal protective equipment conservation strategies, testing protocols, universal masking, and restarting elective procedures during a cross-sectional survey of infection preventionists in 60 US community hospitals between April 22 and May 8, 2020.

Bobby G. Warren, Alicia Nelson, David K. Warren, Meghan A. Baker, Candace Miller, Tracey Habrock, Jahnavi Bongu, Abinav Gowda, Jacob Johnson, Deverick J. Anderson

Summary: This study investigated the impact of home CHG bathing on surgical site CHG concentration, and found that different application methods of CHG can affect its skin concentration.

VanA rectal swab screening as a predictor of subsequent vancomycin-resistant enterococcal bloodstream infection in critically ill adults

Shawn J. Kram, Bridgette L. Kram, Jennifer M. Schultheis, Michelle M. Kuhrt, Andrew S. McRae, Deverick J. Anderson

Summary: The study evaluated the effectiveness of vanA rectal screening for predicting vancomycin resistance in enterococcal bloodstream infections in critically ill patients. Results showed that the vanA rectal swab had high sensitivity and negative predictive values but lower specificity and positive predictive values for predicting vancomycin-resistant enterococcal BSI in critically ill adults. This suggests that vanA rectal swabs may be useful for antimicrobial stewardship, especially in institutions with existing VRE screening.

Summary: This white paper identifies knowledge gaps and challenges in healthcare epidemiology research related to COVID-19 and proposes a research agenda. It emphasizes the need for collaboration across disciplines and addresses issues related to nursing homes and social disparities.

Evaluation of Cloth Masks and Modified Procedure Masks as Personal Protective Equipment for the Public During the COVID-19 Pandemic

Phillip W. Clapp, Emily E. Sickbert-Bennett, James M. Samet, Jon Berntsen, Kirby L. Zeman, Deverick J. Anderson, David J. Weber, William D. Bennett

Summary: This study compared the fitted filtration efficiency of consumer-grade face masks and medical procedure mask modifications and found that consumer-grade masks performed similarly to, or better than, some medical masks. Simple modifications can enhance the filtration efficiency of medical procedure masks.

Microbial Assessment of Health Care-Associated Pathogens on Various Environmental Sites in Patient Rooms After Terminal Room Disinfection

Hajime Kanamori, William A. Rutala, Maria F. Gergen, Emily E. Sickbert-Bennett, Lauren P. Knelson, Deverick J. Anderson, Daniel J. Sexton, David J. Weber

Summary: The study found that enhanced terminal room disinfection significantly reduced the microbial burden of pathogens on high-touch surfaces in hospital rooms, especially around the bed. This method was more effective than standard room disinfection.

Burden of healthcare-associated infections among hospitalized children within community hospitals participating in an infection control network

Ibukunoluwa C. Akinboyo, Rebecca R. Young, Michael J. Smith, Sarah S. Lewis, Becky A. Smith, Deverick J. Anderson

Summary: Through prospective surveillance in community hospitals, 84 pediatric healthcare-associated infections were identified over a 6-year period. 61% of these infections were pediatric central-line-associated bloodstream infections, and they often occurred in children under 1 year of age.

Sonali D. Advani, Becky A. Smith, Jessica Seidelman, Nicholas Turner, Deverick J. Anderson, Sarah S. Lewis

Summary: The paradoxical relationship between standardized infection ratio and standardized utilization ratio for CAUTIs compared to CLABSIs, along with challenges in CAUTI definition, incentivizes hospitals to prioritize prevention efforts on urine culture stewardship.

The impact of patient-reported penicillin or cephalosporin allergy on surgical site infections

Jessica L. Seidelman, Rebekah W. Moehring, David J. Weber, Deverick J. Anderson, Sarah S. Lewis

Summary: Patients who reported a penicillin or cephalosporin allergy had a higher risk of developing a surgical site infection (SSI) compared to non-allergic patients. However, the choice of surgical prophylaxis did not significantly affect this association. The reported allergy may serve as a surrogate marker for a more complex patient population.

Summary: The study found that without real-time adjudication, nearly 50% of HA-COVID-19 cases identified using electronic definitions were misclassified. Both electronic and traditional contact tracing methods likely underestimated the incidence of HA-COVID-19.
