Kinetics of iron(II)- and manganese(II)-catalyzed oxidation of S(IV) in seawater were studied here to provide theoretical support for the flue gas desulfurization process (SFGD). Experiments were carried out with artificial seawater and acetic buffer. Results indicated that the reaction order with respect to dissolved oxygen is zero. However, the reaction order with respect to S(IV) is variable: second-order under uncatalyzed condition (4.0 <= pH <= 7.0); first-order under Fe(II)-catalyzed oxidation (2.5 <= pH <= 3.5); first-order (4.0 <= pH <= 5.0) and second-order (5.5 <= pH <= 5.9) under Mn(II)-catalyzed oxidation. The different S(IV) dependence could be attributed to different metal speciation at different pH values. Also, acetate is found to have significant inhibition effect on Mn(II)-catalyzed oxidation in high ion strength solution. The strong catalytic effect of Fe(II) and Mn(II) ions on S(IV) oxidation could lead to new ideas for the design of SFGD systems.

Summary: The study showed that the three-dimensional graphite foam formed by liquid nitrogen treatment of graphite paper can enhance the reduction efficiency of Cr(VI) in MFCs, attributed to the porous structures, edges, and O-doped defects on the surface providing more active sites and inhibiting OH- diffusion, leading to a high local pH.

Summary: A porous exfoliated FePS3 nanosheet with rich sulfur vacancy (Vs-FePS3 NSs) synthesized by electrochemical exfoliation and hydrogenation treatment shows excellent activity in electrochemical NRR. The Fe species are identified as the real active sites, and S vacancies play a role in enhancing the NRR process. Vs-FePS3 NSs can also serve as the cathode of a Zn-N-2 battery with a power density of 2.6 mW cm(-2).

Summary: The study investigates the adhesion behavior of electroactive bacteria under various metabolic conditions using an integrated electrochemical single-cell force microscopy system. It establishes a nonlinear model between bacterial adhesion force and electric field intensity, and demonstrates how the EET processes impact the conformation and unfolding events of outer membrane appendages. The research reveals how the anisotropy of bacterial conductive structure translates into desired adhesion behavior in different scenarios.

Numerical simulation study on the formation and control of HCl during the gasification of industrial organic hazardous waste

Huiyang Bi, Chunhui Deng, Lihao Chen, Xuesong Zhao, Zhongjian Li, Yang Hou, Lecheng Lei, Bin Yang

Summary: Replacing coal with industrial organic waste in high temperature gasification to produce syngas is a viable method to reduce carbon emissions. This study developed novel numerical models to simulate the formation and control of HCl in Texaco gasifier, taking chlorine-containing substances as dichloromethane for mass transfer description during gasification. The models showed good accuracy with a minimum error of 0.55% in predicting syngas components. The simulation revealed that HCl was mainly generated near the nozzle, and increasing CaO amount and decreasing particle size had a positive effect on dechlorination. However, excessively reducing CaO size below 0.1 mm decreased its promoting effect, and high temperature in the flame zone inhibited the dechlorination reaction. Therefore, the developed models provided feasibility for optimizing operating conditions and reducing chlorine corrosion and improving stability during the gasification of organic hazardous waste.

Summary: A novel horizontal continuous-flow dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) system without catalyst was developed for effective degradation of diclofenac in water. The degradation efficiency reached 90% in 14 minutes, with an energy efficiency of 0.181 g/kWh. LC-MS analysis helped identify the intermediates and propose a possible degradation pathway. Thus, the DBD reactor shows great potential for pharmaceutical wastewater treatment.
