Summary: Earth-abundant transition metal catalysis has been developed as a viable substitute for noble transition metal catalysis in hydrogenation reactions. However, the hydrogenation of thioamides using earth-abundant transition metals has not been reported due to catalyst poisoning by sulfur-containing molecules. In this study, we successfully achieved manganese-catalyzed hydrogenative desulfurization of thioamides to amines or imines by employing MnBr(CO)(5) instead of commonly-used pincer-manganese catalysts, along with NEt3 and CuBr. This reaction demonstrated excellent selectivity in breaking the C=S bond of thioamides, unlike the only known Ru-catalyzed hydrogenation of thioamides, and it exhibited unprecedented chemo-selectivity towards vulnerable functional groups.

Summary: This study utilized colorimetric methods to determine manganese(III)-pyrophosphate complex at trace levels, and developed an ozonation method to measure dissolved Mn concentrations. Different compounds such as oxalic acid, EDTA, humic acid, and desferrioxamine B were found to have varying effects on the oxidation of bisphenol A and hydroquinone by Mn compounds. Additionally, a Mn(VII)-reducer-PP system showed potential for the transformation of phenolic compounds in polluted water treatment.

Summary: The oxidation of S(IV) in aqueous aerosols is accelerated compared to bulk solutions, with an enhancement in rates due to surface effects and potential aerosol pH gradients. This finding helps to explain the higher sulfate concentrations observed in the atmosphere and shows that inorganic oxidation processes can be accelerated in micron-sized aqueous droplets.

Summary: This study explores the application of processed orange peel waste (POP) as an effective solution for removing Mn(II) and Co(II) ions from water. The optimal conditions for removing these ions were determined, and the adsorption capacities of POP at different temperatures were evaluated. Thermodynamic investigations confirmed the nature of the adsorption process. Thus, POP is an efficient and environmentally friendly material for water purification and environmental remediation.

Summary: Replacing coal with industrial organic waste in high temperature gasification to produce syngas is a viable method to reduce carbon emissions. This study developed novel numerical models to simulate the formation and control of HCl in Texaco gasifier, taking chlorine-containing substances as dichloromethane for mass transfer description during gasification. The models showed good accuracy with a minimum error of 0.55% in predicting syngas components. The simulation revealed that HCl was mainly generated near the nozzle, and increasing CaO amount and decreasing particle size had a positive effect on dechlorination. However, excessively reducing CaO size below 0.1 mm decreased its promoting effect, and high temperature in the flame zone inhibited the dechlorination reaction. Therefore, the developed models provided feasibility for optimizing operating conditions and reducing chlorine corrosion and improving stability during the gasification of organic hazardous waste.
