Summary: Sphingomonas paucimobilis, an aerobic, non-fermentative, Gram-negative opportunistic bacillus, can persist on the surfaces of environmental devices in healthcare settings, leading to a prolonged outbreak. Individual tracking and documentation of pre- and post-disinfection procedures for critical care equipment, such as thoracic drainage aspirators and ECMO water heater devices, are crucial for complete elimination of the source of infection.

Summary: This study investigated the clinical presentations, complications, and outcomes of Sphingomonas paucimobilis-specific lacrimal drainage infections. A retrospective chart review was conducted on patients diagnosed with these infections and managed at a tertiary care Dacryology Service from November 2015 to May 2022. The results showed that Sphingomonas-specific lacrimal sac infections can have aggressive clinical presentations and require early and intensive therapy. Multimodal management yielded excellent outcomes.

Summary: This article presents a rare case of meningitis caused by a co-infection with Sphingomonas paucimobilis and Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The clinical presentation and management of S. paucimobilis meningitis are not well established, and further research is needed. The literature search revealed a small number of reported cases, highlighting the importance of better understanding this rare infection.

Summary: Sphingomonas paucimobilis ZJSH1 is an endophytic bacterium that promotes plant growth. Its genome has gene fragment rearrangement and integration with phage genes. Functional analysis revealed colonization-related genes, chemotaxis, invasion, and genes encoding active materials. The bacterium exhibited resistance to salt, drought, and cadmium stresses. Its genome analysis contributes to understanding growth-promoting mechanisms and agricultural applications.

Summary: This study retrospectively analyzed the incidence of Burkholderia cepacia complex (BCC) bacteremia and its associated factors in neonates referred from Syria to Turkey. The results showed a high rate of BCC infection and a relatively high case fatality rate in these neonates. For medical centers accepting patients from conflict-affected regions, early detection of bacteremia, appropriate treatment planning, and prevention of cross-contamination risks are crucial.

Summary: This article reviews the reports of probiotic sepsis in preterm infants. The study found that probiotic sepsis is relatively rare in preterm infants, and the majority of cases recover after treatment. The importance of monitoring and treating probiotic sepsis, as well as researching alternatives to probiotics (such as postbiotics), is emphasized.

Summary: This study proposes an efficient method for mutagenesis and rapid screening of high-yield gellan gum mutants using atmospheric and room temperature plasma (ARTP) treatment combined with Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS). A NIRS model for online detection of gellan gum yield was constructed using joint interval partial least squares (siPLS) regression. Five genetically stable mutant strains were screened using the online NIRS detection method from approximately 600 mutant strains induced by ARTP. The gellan gum yield of mutant strain 519 was 9.427 g/L (increased by 133.5%) under the optimal fermentation conditions, compared to the original strain. Therefore, the ARTP mutation method combined with the NIRS model can be used to screen high-yield mutant strains of gellan gum and other polysaccharides.

Summary: Atrophic rhinitis is a clinically recognized condition. This study presents a case of a patient diagnosed with atrophic rhinitis, where an uncommon bacterial pathogen, Sphingomonas paucimobilis, was isolated in nasal cultures. The study discusses the microorganisms associated with atrophic rhinitis and highlights the significant morbidity and mortality associated with these infections. Due to limited knowledge on the disease, diagnosis is often delayed, emphasizing the need for frequent monitoring and treatment to avoid complications. This study emphasizes the importance of considering this rare infection in patients presenting with nasal blockage, even in non-endemic areas.
