Summary: This study investigated the properties of water solution of ciprofloxacin confined in single wall carbon nanotubes, examining the influence of nanotube size and structure on interactions with the drug. Raman spectroscopy of the carbon nanotubes revealed a correlation between their amorphousness and semiconductor properties, while FT-IR spectroscopy was used to identify the structure of the confined ciprofloxacin and determine which vibrations of functional groups in the ciprofloxacin molecule were suppressed by confinement.

Summary: This study investigated the ingestion of microplastics by wild freshwater fish species. Results show that a small percentage of perch and vendace had ingested plastic, with most microplastics found being polyethylene, polypropylene, and polyethylene terephthalate. The developed method revealed low levels of ingested microplastics on average, suggesting the need for further development for routine monitoring of small microplastics.

Summary: This study demonstrates the efficient photodegradation of ciprofloxacin using 266 nm laser beams, with analysis conducted through UV-Vis and FTIR spectroscopy, pH assay, and laser-induced fluorescence. HPTLC densitometry was utilized for characterizing fluorescence and fluorescence lifetime of photodegradation products. The results provide valuable insights into the degradation process and the identification of photoproducts.

Summary: Large-scale genotype-phenotype screens provide valuable data for identifying molecular alterations associated with a phenotype. This study focuses on the importance of epistatic effects in association studies, and aims to develop a method that can consider three-way interactions. The proposed method, Pint, outperforms known methods in simulated data and demonstrates accuracy in antibiotic resistance testing and siRNA perturbation screens.

Summary: Ti/RuO2-TiO2 anodes were prepared using unconventional heating methods involving CO2 laser and microwave irradiation. These anodes exhibited improved electrochemical properties compared to conventionally-prepared anodes, with increased voltammetric charge and decreased charge transfer resistance. The laser and microwave-prepared anodes also had longer lifetimes and high efficiency in generating hypochlorite and degrading ciprofloxacin.

Summary: Aerococcus urinae is a urinary pathogen known for its resistance to fluoroquinolones. This study validated the Etest method on sheep blood agar for testing the susceptibilities of Aerococcus urinae to ciprofloxacin and levofloxacin, comparing it with the BMD method. The study found good agreement between Etest results and the reference methods, making it a suitable option for clinical laboratories testing Aerococcus urinae isolates.

Summary: This study evaluated the affinity and antibacterial activity of phenolic acid compounds derived from the shikimate pathway against NorA. It found that p-coumaric acid showed the strongest affinity and inhibitory effect. These findings suggest the potential of p-coumaric acid as a novel NorA efflux pump inhibitor.

Summary: This paper investigates the measurement and calibration of integrated water vapour (IWV), and highlights the limitations of the widely used correction model. It proposes an improved correction method that incorporates a multiple linear regression approach and validates its effectiveness through experiments. The paper emphasizes the importance of accounting for errors in both variables when using regression methods.

Summary: This article presents a case of spontaneous regression of thoracic malignancy in a patient with epidermal growth factor receptor-mutant adenocarcinoma. The patient experienced contralateral aspiration pneumonia before surgery, but showed complete pathologic regression without any preoperative oncologic treatment. Immune system activation and the role of tumor microenvironment in disease progression and treatment are highlighted.

Summary: Silver nanowires (AgNWs) were successfully synthesized using a PVP-free hydrothermal method with Alpinia zerumbet leaf as a reducing agent and template. The diameter and length of AgNWs were approximately 77 nm and 10 μm, respectively. The biomass initially acted as a reducing agent and formed a pipe-shaped soft template during the hydrothermal process. Silver ions were adsorbed and reduced along the soft templates, resulting in the formation of AgNWs through the oriented attachment mechanism. The study also investigated the mechanism of AgNWs synthesized by the polyol method, suggesting that they may also grow based on the oriented attachment mechanism using PVP as a template.

Summary: Dating of organic findings is a fundamental task in many scientific fields, with radiocarbon dating and dendrochronology being the most commonly used methods. However, both methods have systematic restrictions. Molecular changes over time are reported for many materials under different preservation conditions, serving as clocks that start at the time when a given molecule was formed.
