We present results of our studies on the practical application of an efficient method for detection of fast and thermal neutrons using the process of inelastic scattering on nuclei present in inorganic scintillators. The most obvious field of practical application for this method is inspection systems for the prevention of illegal transportation of radioactive substances. Especially promising is the design of a small-sized neutron detector for portable radioactive material detection systems using scintillator-avalanche photodiode assemblies.
