If electromyography (EMG) decomposition is to be a useful tool for scientific investigation, it is essential to know that the results are accurate. Because of background noise, waveform variability, motor-unit action potential (MUAP) indistinguishability, and perplexing superpositions, accuracy assessment is not straightforward. This paper presents a rigorous statistical method for assessing decomposition accuracy based only on evidence from the signal itself. The method uses statistical decision theory in a Bayesian framework to integrate all the shape-and firing-time-related information in the signal to compute an objective a posteriori measure of confidence in the accuracy of each discharge in the decomposition. The assessment is based on the estimated statistical properties of the MUAPs and noise and takes into account the relative likelihood of every other possible decomposition. The method was tested on 3 pairs of real EMG signals containing 4-7 active MUAP trains per signal that had been decomposed by a human expert. It rated 97% of the identified MUAP discharges as accurate to within +/- 0.5 ms with a confidence level of 99%, and detected six decomposition errors. Cross-checking between signal pairs verified all but two of these assertions. These results demonstrate that the approach is reliable and practical for real EMG signals.

Rigorous performance assessment of the algorithms for resolving motor unit action potential superpositions

Mehdi Shirzadi, Hamid R. Marateb, Kevin C. McGill, Miquel Angel Mananas

Summary: This study compared different algorithms for resolving superimposed MUAPs, finding that PSO performed the best in the first set, BB in the second set, and BB ranked first in the entire dataset. While BB algorithm is generally fast, it may not be suitable for all real-time applications.

Summary: This study aims to provide a comprehensive risk-assessment model that includes lifestyle, psychological parameters, and traditional risk factors to determine the risk of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) in patients with the first acute ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction episode. The study recruited patients from new hospital admissions for acute ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction and followed them up for 3 years. Data on clinical and paraclinical characteristics, lifestyle, psychological factors, and MACE information were collected for use in the risk-assessment model. A comprehensive approach that considers medical, lifestyle, and psychological factors can improve the identification of cardiovascular disease patients at risk of developing MACE through comprehensive risk-assessment models.

Novel frequency-based approach for detection of steady-state visual evoked potentials for realization of practical brain computer interfaces

Mehrnoosh Neghabi, Hamid Reza Marateb, Amin Mahnam

Summary: Various algorithms have been proposed for recognizing Steady-State Visual Evoked Potentials (SSVEPs) in the last decade, but frequency-domain techniques have been generally neglected. In this study, several frequency-domain algorithms were evaluated for the first time and a new algorithm based on spectral averaging on resampled signal (SAoRS) was proposed, which significantly improved accuracy in a 0.5-second processing window.

Summary: This article presents a new algorithm for resolving superimposed action potentials that overlap in time, and it was tested on muscular and neural recordings. The algorithm outperformed other methods in terms of accuracy and efficiency on simulated and experimental datasets. It shows promise for real-time neural decoding and interfacing.

Summary: Our systematic review and meta-analysis show that exposure to man-made electromagnetic fields (EMFs) is significantly correlated with SDNN, SDANN, and PNN50 indices of heart rate variability. This suggests the importance of lifestyle modification in using EMF-emitting devices, such as cell phones, to mitigate the effects on HRV.
