Summary: This article proposes a multipoint SM OC fault diagnosis strategy under a low modulation index, which includes fault detection and fault location. The detection is achieved by improving the existing sliding-mode observer to quickly detect the faulty arm and fault type. The location is achieved by recovering the arm current and differentiating the SM capacitor-voltage data. The proposed strategy can quickly and accurately diagnose the OC faults of SM under a low modulation index, and it has fault tolerance and stability.

Summary: This article proposes an optimized asymmetric trapezoidal wave (ATW) modulation scheme for a modular multilevel resonant dc/dc converter (MMRDC) to reduce current stress over wide load and voltage ranges. The optimized operating point of MMRDC is derived based on the soft switching characteristic and reactive current analysis, considering low current stress and zero voltage switching constraint. The experimental results on a 4 kW MMRDC prototype verify the correctness and effectiveness of the analysis and the optimized ATW modulation scheme.

Summary: This article introduces the application of DC distribution system in enhancing urban power grid efficiency and environmental-friendliness. It also analyzes the limitations of the three-port-isolated modular multilevel converter (I-(MC)-C-2) in bipolar LVDC application. To solve the bipolar imbalance problem, a novel balance control method is proposed based on decoupling the MV power control and the LV bipolar power compensation control.

Summary: This article extends the inherent balance concept previously shown for square-wave modulation to a multilevel version for MMDCs. By introducing a switching duty matrix, the inherent voltage balance is ensured. The study develops a generalized coprime criterion based on circulant matrix theory and verifies the effectiveness of the proposed circulant modulation through simulations and experiments in achieving SM voltage balance in an MMDC.

Summary: This article analyzes the behavior of the modular multilevel matrix converter (M3C) under open-circuit faults and proposes a suitable fault detection criterion for the M3C. It also proposes a modified fault-tolerant control process and a method to obtain the actual maximum intrinsic errors (AMIEs) of the observers. Experimental results validate the effectiveness of the proposed methods.

Summary: This paper proposes a novel online technique named DE-NR that combines the global search ability of DE and the rapid convergence of NR methods to solve complex harmonic elimination problems. The method efficiently computes switching angles online to control harmonics and distortion. Experimental and simulation results demonstrate that DE-NR method outperforms other methods in harmonic control and rapid convergence.

Summary: This article proposes a generalized space vector modulation for single-phase cascaded H-bridge converters, which considers the power processed by each power module and maintains a low total harmonic distortion (THD) multilevel output voltage waveform. The proposed method improves the converter output voltage harmonic spectrum compared to the conventional phase-shifted modulation strategy in cases of power imbalance among modules. Experimental results are included to demonstrate the performance of the proposed method.

Summary: AC & DC hybrid power grid is an important trend in renewable energy systems, and the power electronic transformer plays a crucial role in the conversion and transmission of renewable energy. Existing topologies have drawbacks such as large volume and complex control. The TP-MMC, with a compact structure and multiple AC and DC ports, provides a solution for the interconnection of AC and DC power grids. The proposed voltage source control strategy in this paper enhances the inertial and self-synchronous ability of the AC port in TP=MMC, allowing flexible control of active and reactive power.

Summary: This article focuses on evaluating the over-modulation risk of modular multilevel converters (MMCs). It proposes a new concept called dynamic modulation ratio (DMR) to accurately reflect the modulation characteristics, as the conventional modulation ratio (CMR) is found to be inaccurate for MMCs. Quantitative comparisons show that the DMR-based evaluation method is consistently accurate in all situations.
