The international thermonuclear experimental reactor (ITER) is the next step toward the realization of electricity-producing fusion power plants. ITER has been designed so as to reach the plasma burning condition, and to operate with high elongated unstable plasmas. However, due to the constraints which affect the machine realization, these open-loop unstable high performance plasmas can be hardly stabilized using the Poloidal Field coils placed outside the tokamak vessel. In this paper, it is proposed to use the in-vessel coils to vertically stabilize the plasma. In particular a constraint on the current in the in-vessel coils is explicitly taken into account in the design procedure, so as to yield a controller which can operate safely. Furthermore, the proposed controller is designed as a static-output feedback, in order to obtain a simple structure which permits to envisage effective adaptive algorithms, as it is usually required in operating tokamaks. The sufficient condition provided to design the controller is expressed in terms of a Bilinear Matrix Inequalities feasibility problem. The effectiveness of the approach is shown in a study case. Completion of JT-60SA construction and contribution to ITER

Summary: The construction of the JT-60SA tokamak was completed on schedule in March 2020. All main components were manufactured and assembled to meet technical requirements, and progress was made in the development of plasma heating systems and diagnostics. The development of operation control systems and an improved plasma equilibrium control scheme suitable for superconducting tokamaks including ITER has also been completed.

Summary: An initial concept for the plasma diagnostic and control system of the DEMO has been developed, aiming to provide reliable plasma control and high performance electricity output. The conflicting requirements of maximizing fusion power and improving operational reliability are addressed, as well as the challenges posed by adverse effects on all in vessel components of the DEMO. Simulation tools are being used for validation and refinement of the concept.

Constrained Reference Tracking via Structured Input-Output Finite-Time Stability

Summary: This article extends the control approach based on structured input-output finite-time stability to tackle the reference tracking problem. By properly augmenting the system and considering saturation constraints on the actuators, specific requirements on the closed-loop system response during transients can be enforced. The original bilinear matrix inequality problem is relaxed to a linear matrix inequality problem with some conservatism but improved computational efficiency. The effectiveness of the proposed approach is demonstrated in the case of longitudinal control of a missile.

RPUGuard: Real-Time Processing Unit Virtualization for Mixed-Criticality Applications

Summary: This paper proposes an architectural solution for virtualizing RPUs in complex embedded systems. The solution, named RPUGuard, guarantees isolated communication channels with a fixed bandwidth between virtual machines running on APUs and the RPU on the same MPSoC. The evaluation shows that RPUGuard can mitigate the weaknesses of current asymmetric communication techniques and provide isolation guarantees to critical communication channels.

Assessment of Initial-State-Opacity in Live Bounded and Reversible Discrete Event Systems via Integer Linear Programming

Summary: This paper presents a solution to the opacity property in discrete event systems and the related Initial State Opacity (ISO) problem. The sufficient condition to check ISO is obtained by solving Integer Linear Programming problems, utilizing the algebraic representation of Petri nets and the structural representation of behavior using minimal support T-invariants. The effectiveness of the approach is demonstrated through examples.

Vertical stabilization of tokamak plasmas via extremum seeking
