Summary: The study aimed to evaluate trends in positive surgical margin incidence and factors associated with surgical margin status in cT1-T2 oral cavity squamous cell carcinoma. The results showed that the overall rate of positive surgical margins in cT1-T2 oral cavity squamous cell carcinoma is decreasing. Surgical subsite, disease staging, lymphovascular invasion, and histologic grade were identified as independent predictors of positive surgical margins.

Summary: This study analyzed national trends in HPV testing for patients diagnosed with SNSCC, finding that patients with high-grade tumors were more likely to be tested, while those living in suburban areas were less likely. Additionally, there was no significant survival benefit to HPV testing, with tested and nontested groups having similar overall survival rates.

Summary: Positive surgical margins in oral cavity squamous cell carcinoma are associated with cost escalation, treatment intensification, and greater risk of recurrence and mortality. The positive margin rate has been decreasing for cT1-T2 oral cavity cancer over the past 2 decades.

Summary: The study found that decreases in stroke incidence rates may be associated with smaller memory decrements immediately after stroke onset. Additionally, reductions in stroke incidence and improvements in stroke care may also reduce the population burden of dementia. Further investigations into whether temporal trends are attributable to improvements in stroke care are necessary.

Summary: This study evaluated the global research trends and key bibliometric indices in MERS-CoV research from 2012 to 2021. The findings showed a significant increase in scientific production in MERS-CoV research between 2013 and 2016 and identified the trend topics in 2021, such as COVID-19, clinical characteristics, and cytokine storm. Saudi Arabia had the strongest collaboration with the USA, while the USA had the highest collaboration with China.

Summary: This study found that the percentage of locally advanced OPSCC undergoing surgery-based therapy has decreased in both HPV-positive and HPV-negative disease. Factors associated with surgery included younger age, health insurance, and treatment at academic centers.

Summary: This study evaluated the temporal trends in cigarette and e-cigarette advertisement exposure among US adolescents from 2012 to 2020. The prevalence of exposure to cigarette marketing remained high, with an increasing trend observed in recent years. Similar patterns were seen in e-cigarette marketing exposure. Further regulation efforts are needed to mitigate adolescent exposure to tobacco marketing.

Summary: This study analyzed the temporal trend of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and osteoarthritis (OA) in South Korean adults from 1998 to 2021, including the COVID-19 pandemic period. The prevalence of RA and OA showed a steady decrease, but there was a slight increase after the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Vulnerable groups, including older adults, urban residents, and those with higher education, showed higher odds ratios for OA.

Summary: The study found that in patients with oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma, those undergoing transoral robotic surgery (TORS) had better overall survival compared to those undergoing nonrobotic surgery (NRS). Specifically, TORS was associated with significantly improved survival rates in patients with base of tongue primaries.

Summary: Surgery can serve as an important moment for behavior change, especially in smoking cessation. This study investigated the prevalence of smoking in surgical patients and found that nearly one-quarter of patients smoked, with higher rates among those without insurance or receiving Medicaid. Targeted smoking cessation interventions at the time of surgery could be effective, particularly for at-risk patient groups.

Summary: This study investigated the incidence and trends of head and neck cancer in Costa Rica, specifically focusing on the potentially human papillomavirus (HPV)-related and HPV-unrelated head and neck squamous cell carcinomas (HNSCC). The findings showed a decreasing incidence of HNSCC overall, but an increasing trend for HPV-related HNSCCs. This study is important for understanding the epidemiology of head and neck cancer and the impact of HPV.

Summary: This study investigated the burden of RHD and type of procedure among patients undergoing valve surgery in the Dominican Republic. Results showed an increase in surgical RHD rates over the past 5 years, affecting a relatively young population with mitral involvement being the predominant lesion and prosthetic replacement being the leading procedure. These findings may guide local and regional institutions and policy makers towards the implementation of cost-effective initiatives against RHD.

Summary: The study aimed to evaluate colorectal, breast, and cervical cancer screening patterns among Canadian adults using data from 2007-2016. The results showed that a significant percentage of eligible individuals did not undergo timely screening tests for these cancers, with lower income and identification as a visible minority being associated with a higher likelihood of not receiving timely screenings. Efforts from health authorities are needed to address these disparities.
